Trustus Theatre Opens 28th Season with NEXT TO NORMAL, 9/7

Trustus Theatre is starting their 28th season with the intensely moving Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical Next To Normal. This show will mark the first show under the new leadership of Dewey Scott-Wiley and Larry Hembree as Artstic Director and Managing Director, respectively, as well as the South Carolina premiere of the show which closed on Broadway in January 2011. Trustus Theatre is kicking off their Last Call Series with a fan-favorite in Columbia: Plan 9 from Outer Space. The show was adapted from Ed Wood's B-movie science-fiction-horror flick by local actor Shane Silman, who still serves as both director and cast member in this production. The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey has announced the complete cast for its production of the award-winning musical Man of La Mancha which will begin performances on October 17th at the Shakespeare Theatre's Main Stage, the F.M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre, 36 Madison Ave. (at Lancaster Road) in Madison. Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased by calling the box office at 973-408-5600 or by visiting www.ShakespeareNJ.org. Shanoff, One Night Only is a completely improvised musical. With music direction by Mike Descoteaux, One Night Only stars Kate Cohen, Matthew Van Colton, Katie Dufrensne, Nicole C. Hastings, Kevin Sciretta and Michael Girts. The cast creates a brand new musical each night, developed through audience suggestion, singing, dancing, rhyming, rapping and free play. Japanese Director Kenji Misumi Receives Retrospective at Moving Image, 10/5-14

Japanese director Kenji Misumi (1921-1975) was best known for his wildly popular Zatoichi and Lone Wolf and Cub samurai films. Versatile and underrated in the West, he was also one of the pioneers of the jidai geki (historical drama), and was nicknamed Little Mizoguchi for his stylistic mastery. In collaboration with the Japan Foundation, Museum of the Moving Image presents a seven-film retrospective of the director's works from October 5 through 14, 2012. (more...)

Playwrights Horizons' THE WHALE, Starring Cassie Beck, Shuler Hensley and More, to Run Through Dec 2

Previews begin Friday, October 12 for the Playwrights Horizons' production of THE WHALE, the New York premiere of a new play by Obie Award winner Samuel D. Hunter (A Bright New Boise). Directed by Davis McCallum (February House, A Bright New Boise, the upcoming Water By the Spoonful at Second Stage), the production has an Opening Night set for Monday, November 5 at 7PM at Playwrights Horizons' Peter Jay Sharp Theater (416 West 42nd Street).
