Breckenridge, President and CEO of Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS), announced today the nominations and presenters for TUTS' 12th annual Tommy Tune Awards which will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. Developed by TUTS, the Tommy Tune Awards honor musical theatre excellence at the high school level. Co-hosts for the award ceremony include Jim Bernhard and Sarah Pepper. Bernhard has written several original productions that have debuted at TUTS and authored the theatrical history Stars in Your Eyes. Pepper is the morning host of The Hot Show on HOT 95.7 FM. The show will run through April 27, 2014 and is based on the Academy Award-winning film, Shrek. With book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire and music by Jeanine Tesori, the timeless fairytale of rescued damsel in distress takes many fun and quirky twists as the green and stinky swampland ogre saves Princess Fiona and wins her love. Christopher Sieber, who will be Broadway's newest Miss Trunchbull in Matilda, will have to wait to play the tyrant headmistress on stage .During rehearsals for his debut as Miss Trunchbull in MATILDA THE MUSICAL last month, Sieber fractured a bone in his hand. He is now expected to begin performances on Tuesday April 8 if his hand is fully healed. Cast member Ben Thompson will perform the role beginning this Tuesday March 18 when Mr. Sieber had hoped to begin performances in the show. (more...)

Mercury Theater Chicago, 3745 N Southport Ave., will celebrate Stephen Sondheim's birthday at The Hypocrites' production Into the Woods with a weeklong celebration beginning on Sunday, March 16 with a panel discussion following the 3 p.m. performance with Andra Velis Simon from Columbia College Chicago and Director Geoff Button, and a second panel discussion on Saturday, March 22 following the 2 p.m. performance with Kris Vire, Associate Editor at Time Out Chicago and Executive Director L. Walter Stearns. The matinee performance on March 22, Stephen Sondheim's actual birthday, will also feature a classic Sondheim sing-a-long immediately following the panel discussion with selections from Merrily We Roll Along, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George and Roadshow. A delicious birthday cake from gourmet Southport bakery Sensational Bites A Dessert Cafe will be served following the sing-a-long on March 22. Seymour. America's favorite musical about big brass bands and small-town spirit will be performed by an African-American cast. The River City, Iowa setting will be based on historical accounts of black communities established during the Great Migration as former slaves moved across the U.S. following the Civil War. Based on the haunting true story of an American explorer and entrepreneur, this riveting musical is composed by Adam Guettel, who also wrote PSP's 2011 award-winning hit, The Light in the Piazza.
