THE SOUND OF MUSIC: 45th ANNIVERSARY EDITION will be available at all physical and digital retail outlets starting November 2 through Legacy/Rodgers & Hammerstein/FOX. The release of the deluxe soundtrack edition, with new liner notes and newly-rediscovered photos from the FOX archives, will coincide with the film's high definition Blu-ray Disc debut from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. To commemorate the film's anniversary, TCFHE will release individually numbered Limited Collector's Sets packaged in a keepsake box featuring the digitally remastered and restored film on Blu-ray Disc, a bonus DVD copy of the film, the new deluxe soundtrack CD, a 100-page 'My Favorite Things' scrapbook, a reproduction of the original 1965 souvenir program, an exclusive hand-painted 'My Favorite Things' music box and more. The New York Times is reporting that on October 29, 2010, Oprah will host the cast of the 1965 film version of The Sound of Music. The Sound of Music, the perennial favorite about a problem named Maria, graces the Ogunquit stage from June 30 through July 24. This final collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein stars the multi-talented veteran of stage and screen, Rex Smith as Capt. von Trapp. Smith started his career as a 'teen idol' heartthrob with the platinum album hit 'You Take My Breath Away,' then made his stage debut on Broadway at the height of his popularity as Danny Zuko in the original production of Grease. He captivated both critics and audiences and received the Theater World Award for his memorable portrayal of Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance on Broadway. Other starring roles on Broadway include Grand Hotel, Sunset Boulevard, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Annie Get Your Gun and Kiss Me Kate as well as many television and film roles. (more...)

It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I actually saw the stage version of THE SOUND OF MUSIC. Of course, I'd been exposed to the movie version long before that, but I never really enjoyed watching it until they started letterboxing the film for broadcast presentations, because the 'pan and scan' versions always ruined the beautiful vistas captured by the cinematographer. But, you don't have to worry about that at the Muny, which offers up its own 'widescreen' take on this classic musical (it is a big stage, after all), producing a solid and enjoyable outing fit for the entire family.
