The State Theatre Center for the Arts announces the 2014 FREDDY Awards, the 12th year of the program, recognizing and rewarding exceptional accomplishments in the production and performance of musical theater in high schools in Lehigh and Northampton Counties, Pennsylvania, and Warren County, New Jersey. The 2014 program will feature 31 schools, the most in the programs history, and will include a first time appearance by Lincoln Leadership Academy Charter School who will present In the Heights in April. How do you take a devout, sacred religion like Mormonism, pack in a bunch of old, Ohio conservatives, and somehow manage to have them laughing in stitches on topics like female circumcision, rape, AIDS, and homosexuality? That's the genius of South Park writers, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, along with AVENUE Q co-creator Robert Lopez, who accomplished just that. With 9 Tony Awards under its belt (holding in the maggots), THE BOOK OF MORMON is a truly brilliant creation of musical comedy, combining shamelessly offensive language with a generous heartfelt story, uplifting songs, terrific choreography, and quick wit. Continuous tornado sirens on opening press night didn't stop Ohioans from cramming in the Ohio Theatre to worship this truly amazing production. (more...)

Terrence Mann to Perform at Benefit for Middle School 54, 5/19

Terrence Mann, currently starring in "Pippin," will perform at a benefit for the children of MS 54 - The Booker T. Washington School on Monday, May 19th, at 6:30pm in the school's auditorium. Comedian Judy Gold will host the event, with music direction by Joe Bachana. Brigid Brady ("The Phantom of the Opera"), Paula Leggett Chase ("Bye Bye Birdie), Lauri Landry ("The Scarlet Pimpernel") and George Merrick ("South Pacific") are scheduled to appear. In addition, MS 54 parent-performers are to include Marc Bernstein, Nathan Carver, Rob Derke, L. J. Ganser, Lisa Tamagini, Maren Waxenberg and Sarah Worthington. MS 54 is a public middle school on West 108th Street, which serves some 825 children. (more...)

Nominees Announced for the 2014 Henry Mancini Musical Theatre Awards

For 20 years, the Henry Mancini Musical Theatre Awards have been a celebration of outstanding student achievement in high school musical theatre in Beaver, Butler, and Lawrence counties. These awards recognize individual artistry and honor the dedication and professionalism of students and educators and their schools' commitment to performing arts education. The committee is proud to announce this year's nominees, who will be honored at a private reception at Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center on May 18. At the Nominees Reception, nominations will be read by Broadway veteran Lenora Nemetz, and nominees will receive a medal and commemorative certificate. The Awards Ceremony will be held at the Center on May 21 and will feature performances by several adjudicated productions. Former honorees will serve as presenters and tribute awards will be given to those who have greatly influenced the Henry Mancini Musical Theatre Awards. A Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Mr. Phil Inman, and Mrs. Ginny Mancini will be in attendance. (more...)

The 5th Avenue Theatre Announces High School Musical Theater Awards

High school students from across Washington State packed Benaroya Hall tonight for The 12th Annual 5th Avenue Awards Honoring High School Musical Theater, a high school version of the Tony Awards, proudly sponsored for the tenth year by Wells Fargo with additional support from Alaska Airlines. The house was packed with 2,000 teenagers, dressed in costume representing their schools' musical theater productions, who cheered for their peers as they performed musical excerpts and accepted awards honoring top student achievements in musical theater. The acclaimed event, directed this year by Mathew Wright, handed out awards in 21 categories ranging from Outstanding Overall Musical Production to Outstanding Lobby Display. (more...)
