'Brigadoon' is a mythical and magical village located in the Scottish Highlands. Two unsuspecting travelers from the United States stumble upon the town while hunting and are immediately swept up in the activities of the townsfolk whose home only appears for one day every one hundred years.

Tommy, who is unhappy with his mundane life in the States, is immediately drawn into the lives of the villagers who are wonderfully untouched by the modern word He meets and becomes fascinated with a lovely Scottish girl, Fiona, and his life will never be the same.

Tommy's friend Jeff is less enchanted by the surroundings, but he too is eventually caught up in what is happening in Brigadoon, becoming reluctantly entangled with the fetching maid Meg. The villagers are eager with anticipation as the wedding of two young people, Charlie and Jeannie approaches, and the exciting day progresses from eager anticipation to wistful realization that the magical day must end and not come again for a hundred years.

Tommy must make the decision to return to his life in New York or remain in the highlands, and his reluctant return to his old life is soon regretted. Somehow he must return to Brigadoon and to Fiona.

'Brigadoon' is filled with beautiful music, including, in addition to the lovely title song, 'Almost Like Being in Love', 'The Heather on the Hill', 'Come to Me, Bend to Me', and 'There But For You Go I'.

Book and lyrics for 'Brigadoon are by Alan Jay Lerner, and music is by Frederick Loewe The musical opened on Broadway in 1947.

Gene Kelley and Van Johnson appeared as the Americans in the movie version of the musical released in 1954. Cyd Charisse was the lovely Fiona.

First Night's Top Ten of 2010: Nashville's Best DirectorsFirst Night's Top Ten of 2010: Nashville's Best Directors
by Jeffrey Ellis - Jan 17, 2011

If theater audiences in Nashville and Middle Tennessee owe a huge debt of gratitude to the directors who helm the year's finest productions, you can only imagine how the actors lucky enough to work with those insightful, creative men and women must be! The Top Ten Directors of 2010 have resumes anyone would be proud to claim as their own and when you consider that they - year after year - excel at what they do, then you cannot help but be impressed by the breadth and depth of their abilities. Frankly, it boggles the mind. These are Nashville's best directors of 2010... (more...)

First Night's Top Ten of 2010: Nashville's Best ChoreographersFirst Night's Top Ten of 2010: Nashville's Best Choreographers
by Jeffrey Ellis - Jan 17, 2011

Think about it: What if you were watching The King and I and when Anna and the King of Siam started to sing 'Shall We Dance' and they just stood there, it just wouldn't have much of an impact, would it? Or if all those budding chorus members in A Chorus Line just stood around and talked about dancing but never did even the most basic shuffle-ball-change...sounds pretty bleak, doesn't it? That's where choreographers come into the picture; they collaborate with the director, the music director and the cast members to create movement that elevates every musical comedy. Without them, the action remains stagebound and static. A choreographer allows your heart to soar along with the performers onstage, making musical comedy all the more compelling and transformative. These talented men and women created remarkable and memorable work in 2010 as First Night's Top Choreographers... (more...)

If you find yourself venturing outside of New York, and you want to see some really good musical theater, what should you do? Allow me to suggest a visit to my neck o' the woods: A trip to Nashville might provide you with exactly what you seek. After all, in a city perhaps best known throughout the world as Music City USA, what else could you expect but some exceedingly well-cast, well-produced, well-played and well-sung musical theater? We're lousy with exceptional singers and musicians and, as a result, musical theater is alive and well - and thriving - in Nashville. And here's my list of the Best Musicals of 2010... (more...)

by Jeffrey Ellis - Jan 13, 2011

Not all of the Top Ten Lists announced at Winter's First Night on Sunday, January 9, were serious, high-toned salutes to all that is special and spectacular about live theater in Nashville. Sure, most of them were heartfelt and memorable, but some were (how shall I put this?) off-kilter, tongue-in-cheek and just plain fun. And not all the lists were limited to only ten entries; in fact, some had many more than that. But, for your reading pleasure, we present them to you without any real explanation. You'll have to figure that all out for yourself! (more...)
