A Christmas Memory - 2014 - Off-Broadway History , Info & More

Based on the classic short story by Truman Capote, A Christmas Memory is the tale of a friendship for the ages. A joyous, emotional holiday musical that reminds us what Christmas, family, and friendship are all about.

In rural Alabama, 1933, young BUDDY is being raised by three eccentric cousins. He is closest to his COUSIN SOOK, still a child herself in many ways -- and as Christmas nears, she and Buddy gather ingredients to bake holiday gifts for those who've had a memorable impact on their lives in the past year. Sook's sister JENNIE is concerned these fanciful outings will cause young Buddy to grow up soft. Enlisting the aid of their bachelor-brother SEABON, she plots to separate the best friends for their own good.

From the vantage point of time, ADULT BUDDY, now a successful writer, leads us through a series of adventures, hilarious and touching, fondly remembering the onetime soulmates' efforts to both celebrate the holiday and find a way to thwart Jennie's plans.

They obtain Prohibition whiskey for their cakes at a nightclub run by the notorious HAHA JONES; Buddy makes a surprising friend in NELLE HARPER, his tomboy neighbor, leading her on a wonderful adventure of their own; and Buddy and Sook accidentally get tipsy on leftover whiskey, happily planning their lives together as best friends forever.

Despite best efforts to the contrary, Buddy's gift from Jennie and Seabon is a military school uniform and a train ticket. This is to be their last Christmas together. Flying handmade kites one final time that morning, Buddy and Sook vow never to lose touch -- to keep their hearts close as the kites in the sky.

Now, on his return to this place of memory, Adult Buddy renews his friendship with ANNA STABLER, the family's onetime housekeeper who is now the last, living tie to his past. With her help, he makes an emotional reconnection, a catharsis in which he embraces the past and realizes that the next story he has to tell...is this one.

Berkeley Rep to Premiere THE HOUSE THAT WILL NOT STAND, 1/31-3/16
by BWW News Desk - Dec 30, 2013

Berkeley Repertory Theatre announces the world premiere of The House that will not Stand, a historical comedic drama commissioned from award-winning poet-playwright and Oakland native Marcus Gardley. Sensuous, witty, heartbreaking, and uplifting - The House that will not Stand unearths a story about free women of color in 1836 New Orleans, where black Creole women entered into common-law marriages with affluent white men. When her wealthy lover mysteriously dies, Beartrice Albans' foundation of security hangs precariously by a thread. She is left to fend for her three unwed daughters in a world where freedom must be carefully negotiated. Told in a rich and lyrical river of words, this new play was developed through The Ground Floor: Berkeley Rep's Center for the Creation and Development of New Work. It's helmed by Patricia McGregor, whose many credits include the celebrated production of Spunk at California Shakespeare Theater. The House that will not Stand begins previews on Berkeley Rep's intimate Thrust Stage on Friday, January 31, opens on Wednesday, February 5 and runs through Sunday, March 16, 2014.

Plus, Zadan and Meron also clue us in on what elements they seek out in special events such as this as we look ahead to next year's confirmed major live musical - whatever could it be?! Besides all about THE SOUND OF MUSIC, Zadan and Meron also offer us the 411 on a number of other projects immediately upcoming in 2014 and far beyond, with a special focus on their just-announced Harvey Weinstein collaboration on a feature film version of Stephen Schwartz's beloved PIPPIN, as well as first news on a forthcoming original Beach Boys jukebox musical currently in development and preliminary information on the pilot for a new musical series inspired by Grammy Award-winning songwriter Diane Warren titled SONGBYRD, set to shoot in January.
