The 'interactive musical game show comedy' has contestants male and female, from all walks of life pitted against each other in a fabulous battle for drag superstardom. Since 2005, The Ultimate Drag Off has been entertaining audiences in two previous successful off-off Broadway runs in NYC. Now it makes its official Off-Broadway debut! Hosted by NYC Sensation Sweetie (Wig Out, Charmed Life, Project Runway, Starbooty), The colorful 'cast' of contestants is an ever-changing weekly roster with some of your favorite and undiscovered talent from across the country in a wacky glamour-fest with brainy categories, comedic camp and live musical performances.
Audiences can expect special surprise guest co-hosts from Stage, Film/TV and NYC nightlife. In the form of 70's game shows such as 'Let's Make a Deal' and 'The Gong Show' mixed with 'America's Got Talent', this laugh out loud romp is a NYC treasure where the audience decides the outcome of the evening and gets to bestow the winner with the coveted 'Drag Off' crown!

Sometimes it seems there is so much theater happening that it's difficult to keep track of it all. From personal experience, despite all the datebooks, smart phones, tablets, desktop computers and laptops...it's hard to keep everything straight in this wacky business of the show.

It's Halloween weekend and every dramatic personage and theatrical type we've ever encountered is caught up in the annual rush to find just the right costume for their holiday revelries (we confess we've never had the knack for coming up with Halloween get-ups - not since we went in drag to a party at the First Baptist Church as the age of 12…tongues were wagging, we are certain, but we lived to tell about it, so it couldn't have been that bad). In the meantime, there are all sorts of onstage happenings this weekend to keep you otherwise engaged should the difficulty of selecting your costume prove to be too much.
And Sondra Morton, Jayme Smith and co. (that would be Act Too) stages their company's latest work at the historic Franklin Theatre - The Sound of Music - starring Kimberly Rye as Maria, Cameron Bortz as Rolf and the inimitable Matt Baugher as Georg Von Trapp. Check it out!
Joe's Pub at the Public has announced its nightly performances from January 29 - February 8, 2015. Details below!
If you've been a regular reader of this particular reviewer's musings, you know that every year there are long stretches of time where I just haven't been able to critique all the shows I've seen that deserve commentary. So I end up playing what they call in sports, 'Catch-up ball,' and post a mash up of belated reviews from past shows. It's kind of like a critic's version of the song 'Six Months Out of Every Year,' from Damn Yankees. Give or take a month or two, that's usually the time period during which I store unpublished reviews in my fevered brain and then unload them all in one seemingly endless column-like this one is going to be. If my cabaret-show reviewing days will be over (as chronicled here), I might as well go out with a bang-and relieve my procrastination guilt during holiday season. Now I can scratch one New Year's resolution off the list.
The most wonderful time of the year rolls into Coronado Playhouse featuring the locally written holiday hit, Mistletoe, Music & Mayhem!, Dec. 11-21.
RuPaul is back to transform 'herstory' with the highly anticipated sixth season of the ground-breaking series, 'RuPaul's Drag Race.'
Nominees for the 33rd Annual RAZZIE Awards, satirizing the Worst Achievements in Film for 2012, include several Repeat Offenders, returning for more pie-in-the-face/light-hearted joshing in the one Tinsel Town trophy derby no one wants to win.
In addition Way Off Broadway's regularly scheduled Mainstage and Children's Theatre seasons, the theatre also hosts a number of special events each year. Some of the most popular events at the Frederick theatre are Way Off Broadway's interactive murder mysteries where the audience gets involved and helps to solve the case at hand. In recent years, the mysteries have been set to the backdrop of a competitive cooking show, a drag night club, and a talent contest, much like American Idol. Way Off Broadway and Justin M. Kiska, the author of the theatre's interactive mysteries, are adding a new case to their crime files this year with The Campaign Caper, which will have performances tonight, October 24th and Thursday, October 25th.
Genet's menacing and hilarious world of political intrigue, violent revolution and distorted eroticism is measured against the mass-media manipulation of today. THE BALCONY will run from tonight, October 11 to November 4 at The Arclight Theatre located at 152 West 71st Street. It will be presented by Horizon Theatre Rep (www.HTRonline.org).

On August 7 the ghosts come out to sing and dance and reminisce a bit when one of the most legendary musicals of all time returns to the Great White Way and previews begin for a sparkling new production of FOLLIES, directed by Eric Schaeffer, based on the recent Kennedy Center mounting of Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman's haunting and thrilling nostalgia cornucopia. While the various productions of FOLLIES over the decades have a lion's share of unforgettable star turns and show-stopping moments to treasure, the brand new Broadway revival could very well be the ghostly musical's true total resurrection for a 21st century audience. After all, this is the show which coined the term Broadway Baby! Speaking of which, with a cast boasting Broadway heavyweights Bernadette Peters, Jan Maxwell, Elaine Paige and Danny Burstein, along with upcoming InDepth InterView participant Ron Raines, along with the glories of Sondheim's masterful score and the moody magic that this musical can singularly conjure, this production is evidently poised to present FOLLIES as perfectly as potentially possible for a modern audience - so, while taking a look at this particular production and the past performances of the stars of the show we shall parse the looks, lives, love and lore that makes up FOLLIES - and a couple laughs, too - and also consider why it is one of the most important musicals of the twentieth century.
