At the heart of The Mead Center will be a groundbreaking new initiative created by Arena Stage for the advancement of new play development within American Theater-The American Voices New Play Institute. This program-integral to Arena's mission as a leading center for the production, presentation, development and study of American theater-is made possible through the keystone gift of $1.1 million in support from The Andrew W. Chicago Opera Theater Receives $500K from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

On June 26, 2009, Chicago Opera Theater (COT) was awarded a $500,000 multi-year grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This grant, to be used in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Seasons, will support three contemporary and three Baroque opera productions.

The National Playwrights Conference (NPC) at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center concludes its 45th year with staged readings of Carthage by Emily Schwend on July 23 at 8:15 pm and July 24 at 7:15 pm and Bogwog by Abbie Spallen on July 25 at 8:15 pm and July 26 at 3:15 pm. The conference, founded in 1964 and led by Lloyd Richards from 1968-1999, is now helmed by Artistic Director Wendy C. Goldberg.

This spring, the Metropolitan Opera will present The Audition, a documentary film about the intense challenges and pressures young opera singers face as they try to become opera stars. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Susan Froemke, The Audition will be shown on 400 screens across the country on April 19 at 3pm EST (and in Canada on June 6 at 1pm EST) as part of the Metropolitan Opera's series of high definition presentations in movie theaters and performing arts centers. The Audition is a suspenseful competition narrative that provides a revealing behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to make it as an opera star. The feature-length film documents the 2007 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, where each year thousands of hopefuls compete for a cash prize, the chance to sing on the storied Met stage-and the opportunity to launch a major operatic career. The film focuses on the final week of the competition, as judges narrow the field down from 22 semi-finalists to11 finalists while the stakes get higher and the pressure grows more intense. The documentary crew was given unprecedented access to the singers, judges, and events backstage at the Met.

Sherman Cymru's DEEP CUT Comes To The Tricycle Theater

Sherman Cymru's hit production, Deep Cut, which received critical acclaim and won numerous awards at last year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe, will open at London's Tricycle Theatre this March. Winner of a Scotsman Fringe Fringe First, Herald Angel, the Amnesty Freedom of Expression Award and both Best Actress (Rhian Blythe) and Best Actor (Ciaran McIntyre) at the Stage Awards for Acting Excellence, Deep Cut was one of the must see shows of the Edinburgh Festival. The rights to the play have now been optioned by Michael Winterbottom and Andrew Eaton's company Revolution Films and a screenplay is currently in development.
