BWW Review: Director Michael Rothhaar Transforms THE FOREIGNER Into The Laughfest It Was Meant To Be
by Shari Barrett - May 8, 2016

When I heard the Morgan-Wixson Theatre was presenting THE FOREIGNER by Larry Shue, I was hesitant to review the show, wondering why anyone would want to produce a show I had found offensive and not at all funny the first time I saw it elsewhere. But I am happy to report director Michael Rothhaar has mined every moment of humor in Shue's play, keeping me and the audience in stitches throughout thanks to his obvious knowledge on how to present it, as well as his excellent casting of all roles. John Grade's VIEW FROM UP HERE On Display at the Anchorage Museum, Thru 10/2
by BWW News Desk - May 26, 2016

In View From Up Here, the new exhibition at the Anchorage Museum in Alaska, conceptual artist John Grade explores sculptural forms based on Japanese Fishing floats. For the past century, floats made of thick, hand-blown glass have traveled to the Arctic coast from Asian waters, buoyed by harsh, ocean currents. They can get trapped in sea ice for decades, ultimately washing up on the Alaskan shoreline -- often in pristine condition. Grade created his own versions of blown glass forms, many of which are encased in a wood exoskeleton inspired by other organic, ocean bound elements.   (more...)

BWW Review: Transatlantic Love Affair's Remount of the Ivey-Winning BALLAD OF THE PALE FISHERMAN is a Simple Story Beautifully Told
by Jill Schafer - Jun 8, 2016

Devised physical theater company Transatlantic Love Affair won an Ivey in 2012 for BALLAD OF THE PALE FISHERMAN, an original work based on the legend of the selkie, a seal who takes human form. I did not see that production, having only 'discovered' TLA shortly before their Ivey win through their Fringe show ASH LAND. I saw it at the final 'audience pick' show because it was the talk of the festival that year. Seeing TLA for the first time was one of the most moving theater experiences I've had, and I haven't missed a show since. I'm thrilled they're bringing back BALLAD OF THE PALE FISHERMAN as part of the Southern's ARTshare program. Seeing it last night, it's obvious why it won the Ivey. No one casts a spell like Transatlantic Love Affair, as they tell a story and create an entire world with nothing but their bodies, voices, and souls. BALLAD OF THE PALE FISHERMAN is an achingly beautiful and completely engrossing 75 minutes of storytelling. (more...)

BWW Interview: Being That Sixth Person-Talking with Director Timothy Douglas about DISGRACED at Arena Stage
by Ellen Burns - Apr 26, 2016

Lest you might think careers are well-planned, organized endeavors, take a lesson from director Timothy Douglas, who is gracing Washington in a return visit to Arena Stage (last season's King Hedley II was his Arena Stage debut) with his work with Ayad Akhtar's Disgraced, a play about being Muslim or, perhaps more importantly, being perceived as Muslim, in America in current times. 'I tripped into directing,' says Timothy, 'I went to LA as an actor, but found I didn't have the skin for it, so I stepped back and thought I'd be a career teacher, but through some dumb luck, I directed a show, and some people liked what they saw, and I ended up with the Center Theatre Group in LA, as a director. When I finally stopped resisting the path, it started to work.' 'It seems every good thing,' he laughingly reflects, 'has happened as I was being dragged through the back door kicking and screaming.' So, it seems, tripping doesn't always mean falling. (more...)
