Guest conductor Mark Wigglesworth returns to lead Utah Symphony through three incredible symphonies in one night on March 7 and 8 at 8 PM at Abravanel Hall. Opening the concert is Amadeus Mozart's Symphony No. 35 which was written when Sigmund Haffner, who belonged to a prominent Satzburg family, was to be granted nobility. The "Haffner" Symphony was most recently performed by Utah Symphony on the Chamber Orchestra Series in 2009. David Cho conducted. (more...)

The 2014 San Francisco Fringe Festival is back for its 23rd year, running September 5-20, at the EXIT Theatreplex, 156 Eddy Street in downtown San Francisco. The second-oldest Fringe Festival in th U.S., SF Fringe brings the best of bright, new, edgy performances of theatre, dance, clowning, magic, and other sorts of presentations for three consecutive weekends, from Friday, September 5 to Saturday, September 20 dark on Mondays.) The 35 shows for this year's Fringe were chosen, as always, by lottery from the more than 100 entries received. All Fringe performances will take place in one of the three venues within the EXIT Theatreplex at 156 Eddy Street. (more...)

Orpheus Chamber Orchestra performs a concert at Carnegie Hall that explores the musical traditions of Hungary featuring music by Hungarian composers that incorporated traditional folk tunes into their works. The program includes Kodaly's Hungarian Rondo and Bartok's Divertimento for String Orchestra. Violinist Christian Tetzlaff joins Orpheus for a performance of Joseph Joachim's rarely heard Violin Concerto No. 2 in D minor "in the Hungarian Style" on Stern Auditorium's Perelman Stage on Saturday, March 29 at 7 p.m. (more...)

Playwrights Theatre has partnered with the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for two Writings from the residents of the Greenfields Residential Community Home in Ringwood, NJ, the results of a 10-week workshop conducted for the Playwright Discovery Program of Very Special Arts in Washington, DC. Playwrights Theatre provided a playwriting and creative writing residency at Greenfield's Residential Center which houses 32 incarcerated boys ages 13-16. During the 24-session residency, master teaching artists Dominique Cieri and Horace Jackson fostered group collaboration through writing, movement and visual arts dramatizing the participant's perspectives on their lives creating two theatrical performance pieces. As this residency comes to a close, there will be a presentation for family, friends and the public of the young men's work, and a documentation of their creative writing will be produced in an anthology.
