The Ensemble Theatre's 2012-2013 season theme is 'Bridge Art to the Heart,' and their current production of Nathan Louis Jackson's play Broke-ology is sure to touch and even break hearts. The tragicomedy juxtaposes an erudite man against a man who is the self-proclaimed inventor of the science of Broke-ology. In essence, it pits book smarts against street smarts. However, these two disparate men are also brothers who have to deal with the declining health of their father, who is quickly losing his longtime battle with multiple sclerosis (MS) and having visions/delusions of his deceased wife. Directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah, the powerful drama will run through Sunday, April 14, presented by Time Warner. Billed as 'Uptown Meets Downtown,' the production is a collaboration between the Classical Theatre of Harlem (Ty Jones, Producing Artistic Director), National Black Theatre (Sade Lythcott, CEO; Nabii Faison, General Manager and The Public Theater (Oskar Eustis, Artistic Director; Patrick Willingham, Executive Director). Nicola has announced that Fetch Clay, Make Man, written by Will Power and directed by Des McAnuff, will begin performances Friday, August 23 at NYTW, 79 East 4 Street, between Bowery and Second Avenue. In 1865, the Jewish holiday of Passover began the day after Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox. This historical moment is the jumping off place for Matthew Lopez's suspenseful Civil War drama The Whipping Man, which receives its Central New York premiere at the Kitchen Theatre in downtown Ithaca this month. The Whipping Man runs from January 23rd through February 10th, with preview performances January 23-25, Opening Night on January 26, and the closing performance on February 10. (more...)

The Rep's artistic director Eric Rosen will direct the production, which runs January 18-February 10 at Spencer Theatre. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded a $174,000 three-year playwright residency grant to Kansas City Repertory Theatre for Nathan Louis Jackson to join the Rep's artistic staff. The award is one of 14 Mellon residency grants made in December 2012. Jackson, an award-winning playwright and a native of Kansas City, Kansas, will begin his residency in July 2013. (more...)

Following its run at The Public Theater, Detroit '67, the much buzzed-about play by two-time NAACP Image Award recipient, Dominique Morisseau, will open at the National Black Theatre on Saturday, March 23. Directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah, the powerful drama will run through Today, April 14, presented by Time Warner. Billed as 'Uptown Meets Downtown,' the production is a collaboration between the Classical Theatre of Harlem (Ty Jones, Producing Artistic Director), National Black Theatre (Sade Lythcott, CEO; Nabii Faison, General Manager and The Public Theater (Oskar Eustis, Artistic Director; Patrick Willingham, Executive Director).
