The last time the 1933 West End musical Nymph Errant was revived in New York, the Medicine Show Theatre Company advertised their production with the selling point that they haven't removed any of the show's racism.  Now, while going to see a racist musical is not exactly my idea of a fun night out, there is a certain historic value to watching older musicals performed with the texts the authors wrote, opposed to the frequent occurrence of slapping their books with labels like “creaky” or “dated” and having contemporary authors make wholesale revisions to transform them into suitable entertainments for modern audiences. STAGES Performing Arts Academy expanded their teen performance workshop this Summer by moving to the state-of-the-art Skip Viragh Center for the Arts at Chaminade College Preparatory School. The three-week program features professional teachers, directors, and guest artists from around the country, resulting in a final full-scale production of Urinetown: The Musical. As STAGES Performing Arts Academy teens neared the end of the rehearsal process, they were greeted by a surprise audience member. On August 2nd, Hunter Foster, who originated the lead role of Bobby Strong in the first Broadway production of Urinetown, stopped in to catch the final dress rehearsal of the show, offering a very special "break a leg" to the young cast. Signature Theatre to Host No Rules Theater Company Through 2015

Commencing this summer, Northern Virginia's Tony Award®-winning Signature Theatre will be the new home to the emerging No Rules Theater Company (NRTC) through 2015. The partnership between the two companies will provide NRTC with use of the Theatre's facilities, including office and rehearsal space. NRTC's 2012/13 season, the company's 4th, will be presented in Signature's 115-seat ARK Theatre. Brian Sutow and Joshua Morgan, the company's Co-Artistic Directors, have today announced their upcoming season, which includes Black Comedy from award-winning playwright Peter Shaffer, the world premiere of The Personal(s), and the anything-goes revue, The No Rules Show. Signature, in its new building in Shirlington since 2007, will assist in mentoring the young and quickly growing company as it remains in residence. (more...)

Utah Shakespeare Festival Presents BARDWAY BABY!, 8/10

Bardway Baby! is back at the Utah Shakespeare Festival for its third annual night of musical entertainment. Bardway, Baby! is a late-night concert event featuring classic Broadway show tunes. Performed by Festival actors, the concert will be held on August 10 at approximately 11 p.m. in the Auditorium Theatre. Tickets are $25 for reserved seating or $10 for general admission.
