Tom Hewitt to Remain in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR for Broadway Run?

Earlier this week, La Jolla Playhouse announced a casting update for its current presentation of the acclaimed Stratford Shakespeare Festival production of Jesus Christ Superstar, lyrics by Tim Rice, music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, directed by Playhouse Director Emeritus and Stratford Shakespeare Festival Artistic Director Des McAnuff. Beginning Wednesday, December 7, Broadway veteran Tom Hewitt (Playhouse's Zhivago and Dracula: The Musical) will perform the role of Pontius Pilate for a limited engagement at the Playhouse. Whether Hewitt will remain in the production through the Broadway transfer remains unknown, but Stratford Shakespeare Festival has released the following statement: (more...)

Among the stars returning to the stage from one of the most popular musicals in Broadway history are Barry Bostwick (Danny), Carole Demas (Sandy), Adrienne Barbeau (Betty Rizzo), Alan Paul (Teen Angel/Johnny Casino) and Walter Bobbie (Roger). Also joining the opening number reunion are original cast members Don Billett (Vince Fontaine), James Canning (Doody), Daniel Douglas (Burger Palace Boy), Katie Hanley (Marty), Tom Harris (Eugene Florczyk ), Ilene Kristen (Patty Simcox), Joy Rinaldi (Pink Lady) and Mews Small (Frenchy). Be whisked away to a glamorous resort in northwest France and meet Elyot (Ben Dibble) and Sybil (K.O. DelMarcelle) and Amanda (Genevieve Perrier) and Victor (Leonard C. Haas), two newlywed couples honeymooning in adjacent suites. As soon as Noel Coward's zany romantic comedy Private Lives begins, the plot thickens - Elyot and Amanda, once a passionate yet turbulent couple who haven't seen each other since their divorce five years prior, realize the other is in the next room! Witty repartee, flip flopping commitments, rollicking fight scenes and golden age charm are combined in this enjoyable Noel Coward classic. (more...)

Review - Stick Fly

Call me envious, but the genre of plays that feature smart, educated, financially well-off characters screwing up their lives under the knowing smirks of the maid serves as a kind of comfort food for me.  And while the discomfort in class, racial and gender issues experienced by the LeVay family in Lydia R. Diamond's funny and quite heated family drama, Stick Fly, may seem a bit too familiar at times, director Kenny Leon and his terrific ensemble help deliver a lively evening. (more...)

William Shatner Headed to Broadway in One-Man Show

Michael Riedel reports in today's New York Post that William Shatner is headed to Broadway in early 2012 with a 2-3 week engagement of SHATNER'S WORD: WE JUST LIVE IN IT which will play for 2-3 weeks at the Music Box Theater on Broadway. The show will be a temporary booking at the theatre, which is currently home to Private Lives, which just moved up its closing to December 31. (more...)

NYC & Company Announces the Return of Broadway Week

NYC & Company, New York City's marketing, tourism and partnership organization, today announced the return of Broadway Week, Off-Broadway Week, Get More NYC and NYC Restaurant Week in January and February 2012. Promotions include hotel offers, two-for-one tickets to Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, and three-course meals at some of the City's top restaurants, with more participating shows and restaurants than ever before. During the first quarter of 2011 New York City welcomed an estimated 11 million visitors. The marketing initiatives aim to increase travel to New York City in January and February during the City's typically slower travel periods and to provide value for both visitors and New Yorkers.
