BWW Reviews: WE ARE SAMURAI Wanders Wild, Well-Made, And Weird
by Alan Katz - Sep 9, 2014

Here's the key: the play takes place in 5 different physical locations within and outside Venus Theater's compound. You, the audience, choose how to experience the play. One could stay in the same location for the majority of the play or follow a particular character around. The best way to experience the play though, is to go wherever you feel like. Is something interesting happening over there? Walk on over. Horrified scream from the kitchen? Best check it out. In this way, We Are Samurai is very much like a mystery, where you try to piece together exactly what is going on and the relationships between the characters.

CABARET LIFE NYC: On the Eve of the 18th Annual Long Island Al Jolson Festival - The Confessions of a Jolson Fanatic
by Stephen Hanks - Jul 12, 2014

The 18th Long Island Al Jolson Festival coming up on August 16 is a whole-day affair featuring film presentations, lectures, memorabilia displays and sales, and a performance--'The Heart of Al Jolson'--by singer and Staten Island native Tony Babino (photo below), who can sing Jolson songs like, well, you ain't heard nothin' yet. The other day, like clockwork, I received my yearly invitation to attend from Oceanside, LI resident Jan Hernstat, who for the past 10 years has been the President of the 62-year-old International Al Jolson Society (which was formed in early 1950, a few months before Jolson died), an organization with a worldwide membership hovering around 1,000. I am proud to say that for 30 years, I've been one of them. I'm even prouder to say that I've been an Al Jolson fanatic for much longer. Here's my story about how it happened.

This year, the Tribeca Film Festival was in for a treat when director and co writer Edoardo Ponti (son of Sophia Loren and the late director Carlo Ponti) bought his short film Voce Umano or Human Voice to the festival. The film, based on a one woman play written by French writer Jean Cocleau in 1930, is a simple story which explores a universal struggle, letting go.

BWW Reviews: American Century's Hilarious, Surreal 'Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Momma's Hung You in the Closet and I'm Feelin' So Sad'
by Andrew White - Mar 25, 2014

Written in the late 1950's in a fine post-graduate frenzy, Kopit's play was inspired as much by the European avant-garde as by the angst of the Eisenhower years. Director Tyler Herman has done a great job in his first production, creating the anarchic, bizarre feel that Kopit's play requires, with Katie Wertz's surreal set and Jacy Barber's biologically-correct costumes (for the fish and plant life) creating just the right off-kilter atmosphere.

BWW Interviews: Jasmin Richardson of MEMPHIS National Tour
by Heidi Scheuermann - Mar 11, 2014

Tonight, a little bit of MEMPHIS is hitting the Big Easy for a 6 day run at the Saenger Theatre. This soulful, Tony winning musical set in the 1950's highlights the story of a sassy club singer, Felicia, and the radio DJ, Huey, who wins her heart and is determined to help her rise to the top despite all of the obstacles they face together. While infused with the heavy theme of civil rights and the extreme prejudice of the time, MEMPHIS is splattered with song and dance that will certainly move you to your feet.
