by Justin J Sacramone - Oct 8, 2014

Season 18 at the Mad Cow Theatre Company is here, and up first: THE WHO'S TOMMY. The 1993 Best Musical nominee is considered to be Broadway's first Rock Opera turned Rock Musical. Shows like Greenday's AMERICAN IDIOT, Stew's PASSING STRANGE, and, more recently, David Byrne and Fatboy Slim's HERE LIES LOVE all followed. But it was The Who that first took their concept rock album and turned it into a warm-blooded stage musical. In doing so they attracted a younger audience (that once looked at Musical Theatre as something their grandparents listened to on vinyl) to Broadway. (more...)

Spoiler Alert! Recap and Review: HOMELAND's Carrie is All 'About a Boy,' and It's CreepySpoiler Alert! Recap and Review: HOMELAND's Carrie is All 'About a Boy,' and It's Creepy
by Matt Tamanini - Oct 26, 2014

I took last week off from reviewing HOMELAND, because, to be honest, I was rather disturbed and disgusted by the final scene. I wasn't sure what to make of it; was Carrie's sexual advances on Aayan the cold and calculating maneuvers of a master manipulator, or had Carrie fallen so far from the confident espionage genius that she once was that she felt the only way to regain some control over her life was to exert her sexuality over some unexpectant prey? While Aayan clearly was not telling her no, the entire act felt dirty and, at some level, non-consensual to me. So, I was anxious to watch this week's episode to see how the show would spin the decision to have Carrie bed the former med student. (more...)

BWW Review: WHAT MAKES A MAN at the Berkley Street TheatreBWW Review: WHAT MAKES A MAN at the Berkley Street Theatre
by Dennis Kucherawy - Oct 22, 2014

While reviewing What Makes a Man (WMAM), now playing at the Berkley Street Theatre, it's tempting to comment on what's not there, what could and should be there, rather than what is there. What is on display is a marvelous musical stage portrait of Charles Aznavour, the world renowned French singer/songwriter, actor and political activist/diplomat. A man of the world, he is capable of singing in five languages. One of the last surviving 'showmen,' he still is capable of filling the world's most prestigious concert halls. For example, a year ago he performed for the first time in 25 years at London's Royal Albert Hall. Demand was so great, a second concert was booked there for this past June. (more...)
