BWW CD Reviews: Masterwork Broadway's SEVEN COME ELEVEN: A GAMING GAMBOL is a Spunky, Winsome Reverie
by David Clarke - Jul 16, 2013

No sooner than Masterworks Broadway's new release of SEVEN COME ELEVEN: A GAMING GAMBOL starts playing, listeners will find themselves transported to the intimacy of The Upstairs Room, lined with lavish, red fabric and soft light emanating from antique globes. We easily picture ourselves sitting at a small table amidst New Yorkers enjoying a night out on the town. As Julius Monk greets his live audience and us listeners, in our mind's eye we can see the lights dimming and we get lost in the enthusiastic performances of Philip Bruns (the father on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, the original Morty Seinfeld on Seinfeld), Ceil Cabot, Rex Robbins (1974 GYPSY Revival), Steve Roland, Donna Sanders, and Mary Louise Wilson (1998 CABARET revival, GREY GARDENS), who are accompanied by William Roy and Carl Norman at the plural pianos. BWW Reviews: Naked Truths at Finucane & Smith's GLORY BOX: PARADISE
by Jacqueline Bublitz - Jul 15, 2013

At the beginning of this performance, Finucane, the sinewy master of these ceremonies, quips that three elements are required for art and its audience - passion, liquor and unrealistic expectation. There is no doubt my expectations are high after the revelation that was their 2012 Melbourne show. But it is dry(ish) July for this reviewer, so I'm approaching this new show with said expectation and passion, only. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Jim Brochu's CHARACTER MAN is a Triumphant, Tour de Force Tribute To Iconic Musical Theater Stars
by Stephen Hanks - Jul 12, 2013

About halfway through Jim Brochu's Saturday, June 29 performance at the Metropolitan Room of his new show Character Man, I realized I was witnessing what was probably the best cabaret show I'd seen this year, and perhaps was one of the best in my almost three years of reviewing cabaret. By the time the show ended, I had changed my mind. Not because the show fell apart in the second half, but because what Jim Brochu had created (and is opening tonight at the Broward Stage Door Theatre in Coral Springs, Florida, where it will be performed until August 11) was more than a cabaret show. Character Man is a delightful, extremely well-crafted Off-Broadway theater piece that is destined for a run that might rival his critically-acclaimed one-man Zero Mostel tribute show, Zero Hour, which played throughout the country between 2006-2012 and earned Brochu 2010 Drama Desk and Helen Hayes Awards.
