Lyric Stage, Dallas County's only locally produced professional musical theater company, presents THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, October 29 - November 7 in the Irving Arts Center's Carpenter Performance Hall. Performances are October 29, 30 and November 4, 5 & 6 @ 8:00 PM and October 31 and November 7 @ 2:30 PM. Tickets are available online @ ww.lyricstage.org or by calling the box office @ 972-252-2787. Ben Harper steals ten thousand dollars. Just before being sent to prison he hides the money in his daughter's doll, setting in motion a thrilling, frightening, and heartfelt story. For sharing Ben's prison cell is Harry Powell, aka The Preacher, who will do anything to get his hands on the stolen money. Anything, including murder. In 1954, Davis Grubb's southern gothic tale THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER hit the New York Times Best Seller list and stayed there for several weeks. The 1955 film version directed by Charles Laughton (his only time behind the camera) and starring Robert Mitchum and Shelley Winters has gone on to be named one of the 100 greatest films of the 20th Century. Now Stephen Cole (book & lyrics) and Claibe Richardson (music) have adapted Grubb's novel into a musical thriller. Lyric Stage is proud to present this great new American musical, winner of the prestigious Edward Kleban Award, with a full orchestra. Davis Gaines will star as The Preacher (Mitchum) opposite Theatre World Award winner Julie Johnson as Willa Harper (Winters). Cheryl Denson will direct Lyric Stage's production with music direction by Scott A. Eckert. This production will be directed by Leslie Ishii. The cast of the production includes Maya Erskine, Kimiko Gelman, Elizabeth Liang, Hiwa Bourne, Tim Chiou, and Jason Sino. Theatre Works records Terry Johnson's hit stage adaptation of The Graduate for radio. Also in the cast are Bruce Davison (Mr. Braddock), John Getz (Mr. Robinson), Lucy Punch (Elaine), Linda Purl (Mrs. Braddock) and Tom Virtue (multiple roles). John Rubinstein will direct five performances, December 8-12, at the Skirball Cultural Center. L.A. BWW Reviews: SCR Presents Dagger-Sharp BECKY SHAW

A great many wrong things can happen on a blind date, especially one between a couple of people that are such complete polar opposites of each other. But what happens when said blind date is not just an awful one... but, really, the worst blind date ever? Such is the premise of Gina Gionfriddo's engrossingly funny play BECKY SHAW, which recently had its West Coast premiere at South Coast Repertory and continues there through November 21. This off-Broadway hit-a recent nominee for the Pulitzer Prize-tells the story of one such blind date that is so awful and so doomed from the start that it actually sets off this chain reaction of searing arguments, intense revelations, and jaw-dropping events that forever alters the lives of everyone in the periphery. Make no mistake, though. This is one seriously hilarious play-but not for the reasons you may think. (more...)
