BWW Reviews: The Guthrie Theater's Magical, Mystical, Mischievous MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM Is A Midwinter DelightBWW Reviews: The Guthrie Theater's Magical, Mystical, Mischievous MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM Is A Midwinter Delight
by Jill Schafer - Feb 17, 2015

Yesterday I sat on the famous thrust stage of the Guthrie Theater and watched a bunch of soldiers, lovers, and fairies dance, sing, fly, converse, love, hate, and generally cavort around in a bare circular space. Or was it all a dream? Such is the Guthrie's latest production of perhaps Shakespeare's best loved romantic comedy, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, that after three hours of spellbinding theater, you're not quite sure if what you saw just happened, or perhaps, as Puck suggests in his epilogue, it was all just a dream. Artistic Director Joe Dowling has returned to an old favorite in his final season at the Guthrie, assembling a gorgeous and talented cast of local favorites with a few national talents thrown in. It's no wonder that he returned to this show; this MIDSUMMER is a dream of a production, with plenty of spectacle in the form of dancing, flying, singing fairies, humor in the form of typical Shakesperean hijinks, and heart in this sweet romance that ends with a neat happily ever after. Everything about it is truly a delight. (more...)

BWW Recap: Nacho Realizes He BETTER CALL SAULBWW Recap: Nacho Realizes He BETTER CALL SAUL
by Courtney Henley - Feb 17, 2015

Last week, we were glued to our television screens as we returned to Albuquerque to witness the birth of Saul Goodman as we know him. We're learning more and more about Walter White's crafty lawyer, including how he met Tuco, and consequently, how he morphed into the ethically confused man we know and love. At the end of last week's premiere episodes, good little Jimmy followed all the rules, as any good defense attorney should. But his moral ambiguities revealed themselves just enough to confuse not only viewers, but also Jimmy himself. Sure, he's responsible for those twins getting their legs broken, but at least he took them to the ER afterwards...right? Right? He's still a good, law-abiding guy...right? (more...)

BWW Reviews: Theatre Memphis Splits Atoms in COPENHAGENBWW Reviews: Theatre Memphis Splits Atoms in COPENHAGEN
by Joseph Baker - Feb 16, 2015

Theatre Memphis' Next Stage has girded its loins and taken on the challenge of staging Michael Frayn's dense and difficult COPENHAGEN, and it must have known from the outset that such an esoteric piece will offer rewards to a select audience. The very title itself (though certainly appropriate) is not exactly audience-inviting; and the language, redolent with physics jargon and theories, is tantamount to watching a foreign film or listening to an opera without subtitles. Indeed, I had been warned by a very erudite theatregoer who had just seen it the previous night that there would be an exodus after intermission: There was. In spite of all this, the play can be richly rewarding for those who remain seated - even those whose only previous experience with physics came in the form of the woefully miscast Denise Richards as research physicist 'Dr. Christmas Jones' in the 'James Bond' adventure THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH (my jaw dropped at that one - as it did recently while watching Jennifer Lopez assay the role of an instructor of classics in THE BOY NEXT DOOR . . . with 'Minnie Mouse'-voiced Kristen Chenowith as an Assistant Principal!)
