by Stephen Raskauskas - Jan 20, 2015

Thirteen years after its concert premiere with the New York Philharmonic, New Yorkers finally saw a fully staged production of Rodion Shchedrin's opera THE ENCHANTED WANDERER. The Mariisnky Theatre began its two-week residency at the Brooklyn Academy of Music with a one-night only performance of this rarely performed opera. Director Alezei Stepanyuk's production, despite some interesting elements, did not did not live up to Shchedrin's fascinating score. Still, the Mariinksy's presentation of THE ENCHANTED WANDERER proved to be one of the more interesting operas in New York so far this season. (more...)

by Matt Tamanini - Jan 19, 2015

The biggest TV surprise of 2015 hasn't been Gina Rodriguez winning a Golden Globe for JANE THE VIRGIN or the success of EMPIRE on Fox, it has been the fact that ABC's new musical comedy extravaganza GALAVANT has been a critical and ratings hit. The show, from the minds of Dan Fogelman, Glenn Slater, and Alan Menken, tells a rather unusual fairy tale, and at the center is the unconventional evil queen Madalena. (more...)

by David Clarke - Jan 17, 2015

It is really no surprise to me that the first musical to open on Broadway in 2015 garnered impressive raves from New York critics. This smartly crafted piece of theatre candy is just sweet and sassy enough. One of the reasons why it is such a gem is because of its fantastically constructed score. Jason Robert Brown layers glitz and glamour on HONEYMOON IN VEGAS, but his trademark nuances and subtleties also add delightful zest and depth to this appealing score. (more...)

by BWW Special Coverage - Jan 17, 2015

During our free time this morning, we were walking by the main stage area where the doors were closed and the security was tight. We could hear the roar of Lion King music and voices rehearsing inside. Although they wouldn't let us in, we stood outside in awe for a moment. As we walked away, we spotted a door around the corner that was cracked open. I took four JTF students inside. We sat in the back row - probably 100 rows from the stage and just watched these incredibly talented children sing thier hearts out. (more...)

Interview with Director Giovanna SardelliInterview with Director Giovanna Sardelli
by Roundabout Theatre Company - Jan 16, 2015

Ted Sod: Will you tell us about yourself? Where you were born and educated? When did you decide you wanted to become a theatre director? Giovanna Sardelli: I was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, when it was really just a desert town, so I didn't get to see much theatre. Right before I graduated, I said, "Oh my god, I'm about to get a degree in theatre and I've never seen a play." My family sent me on one of those theatre trips where you go to London and Edinburgh and see twenty-one plays in twenty days. That trip made me realize that I needed to go to grad school. I got accepted into the graduate acting program at NYU when Zelda Fichandler was running it and Ron Van Lieu was the acting teacher. I started my career as an actor but was never quite satisfied. One day, I was sitting in Zelda's office having a crisis and Zelda said, "You've always had the eye of a director, I think you should direct. Why don't you come back for another year of education?" At that time, NYU had a directing lab where they would invite three former grads of grad acting for one year of free training in directing. Everything I learned at NYU just gelled, and my career as a director has been so much easier than my career as an actress. (more...)

by Jenny Antill - Jan 15, 2015

Many of us fondly remember East is East as the film that was released in 1999 - a superb comedy that also tackles the conflict of interest within a multi-cultural family. However, a lot of people are unaware that it was a play beforehand, debuting in Birmingham in October 1996, also featuring Linda Bassett as Ella, before transferring to the Royal Court Upstairs the following year. The show was writer Ayub Khan Din's first play following a successful career as an actor. We are very Lucky to have the man himself starring as George in this short UK tour following a well-received run at the Trafalgar Studios. (more...)

Good morning, fellow Bachelor devotees! And I say that not because it's morning here (it's 11 PM on Tuesday and I'm SUPER late with this recap), but because the secondepisode opens immediately after last week's rose ceremony, which took place as the sun rose. It seems to be noon tomorrow as the girls give up on the whole 'standing' thing and just sprawl out on the floor in their cocktail dresses. Kimberly, a yoga instructor from Long Island who Farmer Chris did NOT give a rose to, re-enters THE BACHELOR compound and begs Chris for another chance. She is convinced that he did not keep her because she didn't actually get to physically talk to him that evening. Yes, Kimberly, in order to advance on The Bachelor, you must make human contact with The Bachelor. Got it now? Great. You may stay. (more...)
