BWW Reviews: Revealing BREAKING THE CODE at Barrington Stage Co
by Larry Murray - Jul 23, 2014

A rethinking of the 1986 biographical play by Hugh Whitemore about mathematician and computing innovator Alan Turing who was instrumental in solving the Nazi's Enigma Code yet was vilified as a homosexual and chemically castrated before ultimately being pardoned 60 years after his death. A swirling production that is both a puzzle play and a tour-de-force for Mark H. Dold, who plays Turing brilliantly.

BWW Reviews: Ballet's Greatest Hits: YAGP Gala
by Barnett Serchuk - Apr 3, 2013

I recently attended a performance of La Bayadere. The dancing was excellent, but the music by Ludwig Minkus was excruciating. I realize that it has a jump, a bounce, danceable adagio notes, but after three hours of listening to it my head was spinning. I went home intending to wash Minkus out of both my hair and brain by listening to every note that Shostakovich and Prokofiev ever wrote. If I want to hear music, let's not settle for anything less than best and, many times, the brilliant.

Grove Theatre Presents SWEET MAMA STRINGBEAN, 2/25
by BWW News Desk - Feb 25, 2011

The weekend of February 25th, The Grove Theatre continues its celebration of Black History Month with Sweet Mama Stringbean, a celebration of blues legend Ethel Waters starring ValLimar Jansen. Born in 1896, the unwanted product her mother's rape at knifepoint at the age of 12, Ethel Waters grew up unsupervised in the slums of Philadelphia. Violence was more prevalent than warmth or love throughout her poverty-stricken childhood. She left her own abusive marriage at the age of 14, but her voice was beginning to draw attention. She sang and danced at church functions and started performing in black vaudeville in 1917. She then traveled with a carnival and finally moved to Harlem, eventually becoming a celebrated blues singer. She was the first female black singer to be heard on radio and, later, the highest-paid female performer on Broadway. She won a Grammy Award in 1933 and was the second black performer to be nominated for an Academy Award, for her performance in Pinky (1949).
