SOUND OFF: GLEE Chokes, But Shakes It OutSOUND OFF: GLEE Chokes, But Shakes It Out
by Pat Cerasaro - May 2, 2012

Rachel doesn't seem likely to be headed to New York and NYADA - nope, not this time. Mucking up her major shot at Broadway glory - at least as far as high school auditions go - by messing up the words to "Don't Rain On My Parade" from FUNNY GIRL, her anthem, no less - the focus on GLEE's appropriately titled "Choke" episode brought to mind a lyric from Stephen Sondheim's MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG, a musical about the sacrifices we make to get what we thought we wanted - "still with dreams, / just reshaping them. / Growing upů." And that is Season Three of GLEE in a nutshell - the senior members of New Directions learning to let go of childhood and move ahead into the unknown world of maturity; whether the future may bring college, career or pool-cleaning. With more musical theatre references per minute than any episode of the twenty so far in GLEE S3, "Choke" was filled with the stylized storytelling and absurd, although always appreciable surprises along the way that makes GLEE consistently, near-constantly compelling. No, no, no - GLEE has not flagged in the least sixty-odd episodes into the series so far, although the rating may have slightly. Last night's GLEE was a good example of the shifting focus and repeated reinvention that keeps the series fresh - and the comedy is as fearless and biting as ever. (more...)

Glee-Cap: Choke Glee-Cap: Choke
by Robert Lawlor - May 1, 2012

This is it, America- the fate of our two contestants hangs in the balance, and only you can deci - Wait, I'm sorry - I was having one of those "If I were Ryan Seacrest.." moments, but I'm sure you've had them, too, right? But, tonight does come with a showdown of Idol proportions - Kurt and Rachel take on their NYADA auditions - who will make it? Whose dreams will come true and whose dreams will fall a part. THIS.. is Glee! Kurt and Rachel prepare for their NYADA audition in their own ways - Kurt wonders if his performance of "Music of The Night" is too safe and predictable, while Rachel - in usual Rachel way - thinks of herself and her dreams above everything else. Meanwhile, Puck's future hangs in the balance over a test, and in typical Puck fashion - he attempts to use sex to get his way, but is less than pleased when it doesn't go quite the way it normally does - leading him to rock out and declare "School's Out" forever. Sue and Ros don't appreciate the way Santana and some of the glee club girls seem to throw the idea of domestic abuse round as if it was a joke, deciding to channel the girl's to find an anthem of female empowerment. Nominee Reactions: Jeremy Shamos for CLYBOURNE PARK 'Fart Hug'Nominee Reactions: Jeremy Shamos for CLYBOURNE PARK 'Fart Hug'
by BWW - May 1, 2012

Jeremy Shamos Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play for Clybourne Park 'I'd like to say I was so cool this morning and that I slept through the nominations but that's definitely not true. I woke up at 7 with kids and made them turn off their cartoons so I could watch the broadcast, which they thought was boring. The we heard my name called and we started jumping around and had a group hug, which included a Whoopi cushion my daughter snuck in the middle so it turned into a fart hug. it still all feels a bit surreal and I'm still processing I guess, so much so that when I dropped my kids off at school a teacher pointed out that my shirt was inside out. But this is all very exciting and I'm just happy that the show got the nominations that it did. Mine is just icing on the cake.' (more...)
