BWW Review: Village's I DO! I DO! a Show about Commitment, That Lacks Commitment
by Jay Irwin - Jan 18, 2019

As a self-proclaimed musical theater geek, I'll admit to some gaps in my geekdom and Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt's 1966 musical "I Do! I Do!" falls squarely into that gap. Before going to see the current production at Village Theatre I knew nothing about it. I don't even think I've heard the errant song from it off one of my many compilation albums. And now having seen it I'm more than happy to let it fall back into obscurity. With its paper thin, almost conflict free storyline, and songs that simply peter out into an air of forgetfulness, the only thing that saved the evening were the two people performing the show, Kendra Kassebaum and Peter Saide, but even they couldn't save this one.

BWW Review: BEETHOVEN INTIMATE LETTERS at Italian Academy At Columbia University
by Joanna Barouch - Nov 4, 2018

ASPECT Foundation for Music and Arts has other ideas about concert presentation. Using a combination of well-chosen visuals, fascinating descriptions of composers' lives and musical motivations, together with stunningly played music, the standard concert format is nowhere in evidence. The audience is engaged. It learns. It's a brilliant concept.

Smithsonian Channel Presents THE WILD ANDES
by Kaitlin Milligan - Oct 8, 2018

For more than three years, filmmaker Christian Baumeister and his intrepid team braved volcanic peaks, caustic lagoons, dense tropical forests and lightning-strewn salt flats to capture the remarkable diversity of life and landscape found in the Andes Mountains. Traveling to six countries and covering more than 20,000 miles by off-road vehicle, they faced extreme challenges as they ventured to seldom explored locations in search of some of the world's rarest creatures. THE WILD ANDES showcases this spectacular region and its animal inhabitants in striking detail with a new three-part series, premiering Wednesday, November 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Smithsonian Channel.

BWW Review: LOVE NEVER DIES at Starlight Theatre
by Alan Portner - Aug 15, 2018

'Love Never Dies' is absolutely worth seeing.  It is lush.  The voices are beyond exceptional.  Sets, costumes, and effects are haunting. The direction by Australians Simon Phillips and choreography by Graeme Murphy AO completely envelop the space allowed.  The traveling pit orchestra conducted by Dale Rieling is as good as it gets.  There are several, new, show stopping songs and lots of achingly beautiful echoes of the original Phantom score.

BWW Review: THE EMERSON QUARTET BECOMES A QUINTET FOR A NIGHT at Alice Tully Hall At Lincoln Center

Aided and abetted by guest violist Ms. Nokuthula Ngwenyama, the quartet became a quintet and presented a fascinating program of less familiar works by some very familiar composers to the sold-out house.

BWW Review: AVIGNON THEATRE FESTIVAL Presents KREATUR by SASHA WALTZ
by Wesley Doucette - Jul 10, 2018

The figures that appear in Sasha Waltz's Kreatur, now in performance at Opera Confluence at the Avignon Theatre Festival, defy belief. The incomparable costume design by Iris van Herpen transforms the human body with spikes, light as air cocoons, and patterns that appear and disappear from view depending on the angle. Soundwalk Collective's soundscape fascinates as it distorts electronic rhythm, industrial machinery, the sounds of nature, and, in one fabulous instance, The Nutcracker's 'Arabian Dance.' With so many elements of the performance attempting to drag the spectator to an alternate dimension, it is a shame that the world on stage remains one of concert dance convention.

BWW Review: INTO THE WOODS at Footlite Musicals
by The Marriage Matinee - Jul 1, 2018

Once you've read past the words 'happily ever after,' the book typically closes and all is right with the world. But INTO THE WOODS takes that idea and turns it on its head. Haven't you ever wondered what happens beyond those three words? Is the prince really that charming? Does the death of an enemy cure all ills? That is what makes this musical so amusing and enticing. It is a chance to look past the last page.
