[title of show] is an interesting new musical that chronicles the very creation of the show itself, and then documents the rocky road it takes on its journey to Broadway. The musical was initially conceived as a writer's exercise by Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell, who used a 3 ½ week deadline for a festival contest as motivation. But, somewhere along the line the play began to take on a life of its own. The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis is presenting a wonderfully clever production of this work that's greatly aided by a superb cast and sharp direction. (more...)

ncore Theater Company has announced it's upcoming New Musicals Summer Season, including the launch of it's New Musicals-In-Development initiative. Utilizing all three arms of the organization, ETC will assist a creative team in the development of a new musical over the course of one theatrical year. Next Thing You Know, by Drama Desk Nominees Joshua Salzman & Ryan Cunningham, will kick off this new developmental program. ETC will be helping the team develop their new show in association with 321 Management, Inc. and original director John Simpkins, both based out of New York City. A cold reading will take place in February as a part of ETC's Litehouse Series. Some time this spring there will be a MusicalWorld interview/feature on the show and it's creators, and the show will be fully developed in August. (more...)

In 2004, Hunter Bell and Jeff Bowen created an autobiographical musical by the name of [title of show] as an entry for the New York Musical Theater Festival. The production had a ran off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre in 2006, followed by a brief stint on Broadway in 2008. The show is a love letter to musical theatre, and tells the story of two friends who decide to write an original work for a musical theatre competition despite a pressing deadline. (more...)

THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS, the highly anticipated new Kander and Ebb musical now in previews at the Vineyard Theatre, may be preparing itself for a Broadway transfer as early as this season, pending the availability of a theater. Michael Riedel reports in the New York Post this morning that heavy-hitting producers Fran and Barry Weissler have invested $400,000 into THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS, and writes that 'If the reviews are strong, they'll move it to a small Broadway house, very possibly before this year's Tony cutoff date, should a theater become available.' The Tony Award-winning Vineyard Theatre will present the world-premiere of the new musical THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS, with music and lyrics by Tony Award-winners John Kander and Fred Ebb, book by David Thompson and directed by Tony Award-winner Susan Stroman with musical direction by David Loud. Previews begin February 12, 2010 prior to an official opening date of March 10, it has been announced by Vineyard Artistic Director Douglas Aibel. (more...)
