The Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning Vineyard Theatre (108 East 15 Street) has announced an additional two weeks will go on sale today for the world-premiere of THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS: starting Tuesday, March 9, seats for the musical will be on sale through April 18. The Chicago Shakespeare Theatre will present a new staging of Noel Coward's PRIVATE LIVES. The play, set in a hotel balcony, will presented in the round in the new staging, by acclaimed Chicago director Gary Griffin. Performances for the production will begin January 6th. The company has added new seating to its Courtyard Theatre in order to accommodate Griffin's idea, adding seats around the proscenium. (more...)

As the Helen Hayes Awards ceremony on April 5th honors performances and productions from the past year, DC theatergoers will be hearing two gorgeous scores by Jason Robert Brown and Jeanine Tesori, and seeing a new opera about a boxer, a splashing pool on stage, Tyne Daley as diva Maria Callas, Maurice Hines tapping his way on the Lincoln Theatre stage, Mrs. Robinson seducing Benjamin, a red balloon thrilling young audiences, Harvey Fierstein wishing he was a rich man, tales and songs from a Scottish Jewish composer, a new children's show with lots of princesses, a little musical with the title in [ ], a triumphant mounting of a short-lived Broadway musical, and a wordless Kafka classic performed in Georgian style. The crocuses, cherry blossoms, and azaleas will be in full bloom, as the nation's capital will be awash in beautiful colors. In 2004, two nobodies in New York decided to enter the inaugural New York Music Theatre Festival (NYMF). The problem was, they didn't have a musical. With a deadline set, three weeks later they entered [title of show], named after the first line in the festivals application form. [title of show] is a musical by two guys named Jeff and Hunter about a musical by two guys named Jeff and Hunter. Its very specificity gives [title of show] broad appeal, as it takes a thoroughly unique and comical look at the pleasures and perils of the artistic process. The story (within a story) follows the two writers, and their two best friends, as they make the journey from nobodies - to somebodies. Around the world. (more...)

THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS, the highly anticipated new Kander and Ebb musical now in previews at the Vineyard Theatre, may be preparing itself for a Broadway transfer as early as this season, pending the availability of a theater. Michael Riedel reports in the New York Post this morning that heavy-hitting producers Fran and Barry Weissler have invested $400,000 into THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS, and writes that 'If the reviews are strong, they'll move it to a small Broadway house, very possibly before this year's Tony cutoff date, should a theater become available.' The Tony Award-winning Vineyard Theatre will present the world-premiere of the new musical THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS, with music and lyrics by Tony Award-winners John Kander and Fred Ebb, book by David Thompson and directed by Tony Award-winner Susan Stroman with musical direction by David Loud.
