The CSO presents its premier of Igor Stravinsky's monumental work The Rite of Spring on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 7:30pm at the Tivoli Theatre. Originally premiered in Paris at the The?a?tre des Champs-E?lyse?es on May 29, 1913 as Le Sacre du Printemps, this avant-garde ballet was received with an outbreak of riots and hysteria. The score was ground-breaking with its new uses of meter, tonality, rhythm, and dissonance creating a new abrasive orchestral sound. Stravinsky described the piece as "a musical-choreographic work, [representing] pagan Russia ... unified by a single idea: the mystery and great surge of the creative power of Spring'. Over time, The Rite of Spring has become widely viewed as the single most important piece of 20th century symphonic literature that ushered in a new era of musical composition.

Songwriting team Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II brought melodies and words to life in some of the most iconic movie musicals of the 20th Century, and now Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment plans to bring that magic home with The Rodgers & Hammerstein Blu-ray Collection on May 6. According to the Daily Mail, Maria Agatha Franziska Gobertina von Trapp, the real-life, second-oldest daughter of Georg Ludwig von Trapp and Agatha Whitehead von Trapp, has passed away. She was the last member of the von Trapp Family Singers, who inspired the musical and film versions of THE SOUND OF MUSIC. She was 99.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Universal TV production of NBC's THE SOUND OF MUSIC LIVE will air at least one additional time prior to Christmas Day. The original broadcast will take place live tomorrow, Thursday December 5th at 8 pm.
