Just So - 1985 - Off-Broadway History , Info & More

Jack Lawrence Theatre
359 W. 48th St. New York, NY

A project that was a quarter of a century in the making, began with a series of inspirational stories. Stiles and Drewe (Honk! and Mary Poppins) bring us an imaginatively empowering piece of theatre in Just So. Set to an eclectic, upbeat score, Kipling's Just So Stories are woven with wit and imagination into a song-filled journey through the jungle.

"Before the High and Far-off Times... came the Time of the Very Beginnings," when everything was just so, until Pau Amma the Crab started playing with the ocean. This caused the lands to flood, disrupting the other animals and putting them in danger. While the rest of the animals accept their sad fate, Elephant's Child embarks on a journey to challenge and overcome the disobedient crab. Along the way, he meets other animals and discovers how the mysteries of their phenomenon came to be.

BWW Review: Love (and Anger) in a Time of Plague: THE NORMAL HEART at Vagabonds
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Feb 29, 2016

But the play is not all philosophical argument, as important as this is: it also is a love story, a family tale, and an account of the 'band of brothers' that was Gay Men's Health Crisis. And like most great playwrights who turn their attention to public events, Kramer maintains a tight relationship between these stories. Kramer's artistic control of the huge canvas on which he paints is in the end what makes the play so powerful.

BWW Review: A CELEBRATION OF PRIMO LEVI Hallows at 92Y
by Matt Hanson - Nov 19, 2015

Momentous is a strong word, yet not so strong as carbon, the sixth element in the Periodic Table of Elements, inspiring the literary masterpiece known by the “scandalous” title, as its author Primo Levi confesses, The Periodic Table. Named in 2006 by the Royal Institution of Great Britain as the best science book ever written, Levi outcompeted Charles Darwin, James Watson, Richard Dawkins, Oliver Sacks and Bertolt Brecht, to name only a few.

BWW Review: CPCC Theatre Bests Broadway in Beautifully Steering THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL
by Perry Tannenbaum - Oct 2, 2015

THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL is a rather bland tale that challenges a director to perk up the drama, which threatens to vanish once we must pull away from the close-ups on its elderly protagonist, Carrie Watts, that TV and movies so readily provide. In the current CPCC Theatre production at Pease Auditorium, Charles LaBorde has a more satisfying way with the script than Michael Wilson did in the recent Broadway revival.

One of America's most versatile and prolific living composers, Andre Previn, joins Pacific Symphony as the honored guest and focus of the 15th American Composers Festival (ACF). Previn, who has been called one of America's least easily categorized musicians, began his remarkable career as a Hollywood "wunderkind" and a best-selling jazz pianist. Now 86, Previn has received four Academy Awards for his work in film, 10 Grammy Awards for his recordings (plus one more for his Lifetime Achievement), and he is also an honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire. He's held a series of major conducting posts, including the L.A. Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra, but now exclusively composes. The concert is led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, whose great admiration for the legend shaped this year's ACF to reveal the scope of Previn's prowess as a composer.

BWW Reviews: New York City Ballet's Bournonville Divertissements and La Sylphide
by Barnett Serchuk - May 27, 2015

So how far does an afternoon of Bournonville go? I would love to say a long way, yet in the performance on Sunday, May 24 at the Koch Theater, the dancers of the New York City Ballet proved that, while soaring high octane is definitely in their blood, the softer sounds and characterizations of Bournonville may be beyond their considerable and powerful techniques.
