The Act is a musical with a book by George Furth, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and music by John Kander.
It was written to showcase the talents of Kander and Ebb favorite Liza Minnelli, who portrayed Michelle Craig, a fading film star attempting a comeback as a Las Vegas singer. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1977.

This year's program will feature the great American ballerina Julie Kent, a principal dancer with New York's American Ballet Theatre, who will make a special guest appearance. Ms. Kent will perform the leading female role in Stanton Welch's Clear (2001), a role she created at the work's premiere in 2001 in New York. Houston Ballet will also pay tribute to beloved first soloist Kelly Myernick, who is retiring after 14 years with the company. The Jubilee of Dance will close the evening with an excerpt of Stanton Welch's high-speed Velocity (2003), a ballet that pays homage to classical conventions in a contemporary manner. On Sunday, December 7, The Pearl Theatre Company will present a one night only benefit performance of holiday readings, radio plays, and music hosted by WNYC's Leonard Lopate at the theatre company's home on 42nd Street. The special event will include selections of stories from Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, O. Henry, and many more performed by Members of The Pearl's Resident Acting Company including Dominic Cuskern, Jolly Abraham, Dan Daily (currently starring in Major Barbara), Chris Mixon, Carol Schultz and Brad Heberlee. Performing alongside Mr. Lopate and the Company will be the musical duo of Gelber & Manning, providing early jazz standards from Old New York.

The series, running today, November 13 through 23, 2014, includes seven features and six documentary shorts that date from 1977 through 1990, a tumultuous political period in which the nation experienced the loosening of Stalin-era control, the imposition of martial law, and the birth and growth of the Solidarity movement. Four of the screenings will be introduced by noted film scholars, and the opening night of the series will be followed by a reception.
