Vadim Gluzman will perform Violin Concerto No. 2 by Sergei Prokofiev in concerts with the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts on Friday, March 27 and Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 8pm. Music Director José-Luis Novo will also conduct the orchestra in The Sanguine Fan by Sir Edward Elgar and Symphony No. 9 by Dmitri Shostakovich.
Orange County, Calif.—March 6, 2015—The world's most brilliant playwright—William Shakespeare—is reimagined in unexpected ways when Pacific Symphony partners with Chapman University to present “Shakespeare Reimagined,” a festival that explores how The Bard's plays have inspired not only other playwrights and directors, but also composers, choreographers and filmmakers. The festival, which runs through April 19, began last month with “The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark” at Chapman University, and continues on March 13 with a semi-staged version of Mendelssohn's “A Midsummer Night's Dream,” performed by The Chapman Orchestra, Women's Choir and Department of Theatre students. The festival culminates April 16-19 with four Pacific Symphony concerts featuring Prokofiev's “Romeo and Juliet.” The ballet is presented with actors and dancers who help reinstate the composer's original happy ending, which was banned by Joseph Stalin. In the second installment of the Columbus Symphony's American Roots Festival, guest bass-baritone Kevin Deas returns to perform some of George Gershwin's greatest music including extensive selections from his glorious opera Porgy and Bess, including “Summertime,” “It Ain't Necessarily So,” “Bess,” and “You Is My Woman Now.” Gershwin's brilliant and bluesy Piano Concerto and an orchestral suite by jazz legend Duke Ellington paying tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. completes the bill. Led by guest conductor John DeMain, the program will also feature guest pianist Xiayin Wang, soprano Jonita Lattimore, and the Columbus Symphony Chorus.

The annual gala includes a cocktail reception with a Vermont Symphony Orchestra ensemble. An elegant dinner will follow. The Mikhailovsky will dance four performances November 28 - 30, 2014 in Segerstrom Hall.

On The Last Symphonies, Nikolaus Harnoncourt explores his fascinating new interpretation of the composer's last three symphonies; that they are one whole work which he calls Mozart's “Instrumental Oratorium.” Harnoncourt argues that, in terms of structure, the first movement of Symphony No. 39 is the Prelude of the “Instrumental Oratorium,” while the last movement of Symphony No. 41 is the Finale.
The Vermont Symphony Orchestra announced today that more than $10,000 was raised through advertising in the 2014 Program Supplement, a publication produced for the past 22 years by the Southwest Vermont Friends of the VSO.

The Vermont Symphony Orchestra has appointed José Daniel Flores-Caraballo as Chorus Director. He succeeds Robert De Cormier who retired following a 20 year tenure and whose timeless dedication and endless passion allowed the VSO Chorus to grow and become recognized for its merits and outstanding music presentation. “I am thrilled to be the new Director of the VSO Chorus. It is a great honor, indeed, following the footsteps of a major figure of the choral world, Robert DeCormier,” comments Flores. The search yielded nearly 60 applicants from all over the globe with finalists coming to Vermont to audition with the Chorus.
From September 4-14, 2014, Houston Ballet launches its 45th season with the company premiere of John Neumeier's three-act ballet A Midsummer Night's Dream. The ballet is based on Shakespeare's lighthearted play of the same name and follows the hijinks and hilarity that ensues when a well-intentioned plan with a love potion goes awry. Created in 1977, A Midsummer Night's Dream has served as Mr. Neumeier's calling card, being seen as one of his most joyous and popular creations. Houston Ballet is the first American ballet company to perform the famous work and it is the first piece by Mr. Neumeier to enter the Houston Ballet repertoire.

The show has a book by Douglas Carter Beane adapted from the screenplay by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, with music by Arthur Schwartz and lyrics by Howard Dietz. The Band Wagon will be directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Kathleen Marshall with music direction by Todd Ellison. The Band Wagon will run for 12 performances, by special arrangement with Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures.
