As billions of fans feverishly tune into the Olympics, underlying political, religious, and racial tensions are both placated and heightened and this summer Olympic games have been no different with high-profile athletes snubbing their opponents in the public eye.
DETROIT, MI - Over the many years of Olympic competitions, 'going for the gold' has always been about athleticism, national pride and striving for excellence. But no matter where the games have been celebrated, each event has had its own special significance in both sports annals, as well as in world history.
The multiple Award-winning On the Twentieth Century, the Cy Coleman-Betty Comden-Adolph Green musical will be performed in a Staged Concert Version, directed and choreographed by Hal Simons.
Johnny Cash, 'The Man in Black,' was noted as a somber singer of such songs as 'I Walk the Line,' 'If I Were a Carpenter,' and 'Ring of Fire.' The latter was chosen as the title for Richard Maltby, Jr.'s jukebox musical, now on stage at Porthouse Theatre, which loosely centers on the trials and tribulations of Cash's life. While not autobiographical, per se, there is enough of the tale of the man to gain an understanding of Cash, his music, his strong belief in social causes, and his personal problems.
When two of the South's most famous brands team up, hot results are sure to follow. That's why the highly anticipated partnership between Krystal and TABASCO brand has food fans so excited. "You better believe I'm going to be one of the first in line to try the new combo items." Available from June 13 through August 7, the new Fired-Up menu includes great items that can be "fired-up" with a cheese sauce infused with TABASCO Sauce, which is versatile on all of our products!
Award-winning playwright/performer Roxanne Fay, whose "Home Fires Burning" was cited at one of the highlights of the Capital Region theater season in 2015, returns to Catskill's Bridge Street Theatre for eight performances only in a brand new work called "Dream Child: The Trial of Alice in Wonderland". This New York premiere, the second production the play has ever received, opens on June 9 and plays Thursdays through Sundays through June 19 in the BST Speakeasy, 44 West Bridge Street in Catskill.
Americana music ensemble Auburn featuring Liz Lenten will be releasing their 5th album “Love & Promises” on June 17th 2016! The new album was mainly written in the mountains of eastern Crete last year, in a flurry of outpouring! As always with Liz Lenten's prolific songwriting, themes cover the usual range of reflections of emotions and situations – from love, loss, uncertainty and yearning to lucid dreaming, frustrating teenagers, imaginary lovers, and the sorry sad state of the world…. Remarkably it's pretty upbeat mostly actually....honest!

Is it just me or is everyone else amazed by how quickly 2016 seems to be moving - in a theatrical sense, at least - and what with Memorial Day Weekend upon us, we're gobsmacked (gobsmacked, I tell ya!) by the wide range of productions offered up by Tennessee theater companies this weekend. Included are Street Theatre Company's Assassins, Center for the Arts' 42nd Street down in Murfreesboro, Rumors out at Chaffin's Barn Dinner Theatre and the final performance of The Sparkley Clean Funeral Singers at Cumberland County Playhouse.
If there is a Broadway musical that more gleefully and accurately encapsulates the magic and mayhem of creating a brand spanking new blockbuster at the height of the Great Depression than 42nd Street, I want to see it post-haste!

The Pulitzer Prize For Drama was first awarded in 1918, because they didn't consider any play to be worthy in 1917.
Producing Artistic Director Dave Steakley recently announced the 2016-17 ZACH Theatre Season at an event for ZACH's Trustees, annual donors, and Season Sponsors. Raising the bar ever higher, Celia Berk (who in the past year has won “Best Debut” Awards from BroadwayWorld and MAC and received a Bistro Award) celebrated the release of her new CD Manhattan Serenade with the first of four shows at The Metropolitan Room on Sunday night (others are April 10, 17, and 24). Her dream band, helmed by MD/arranger/pianist Alex Rybeck, featured Jered Egan on bass, Dan Gross on percussion, and Dan Willis with his invaluable woodwinds.
You cannot beat the Old Globe Theatre for its audacity in mounting the challenging musical Rain, based on a short story by W. Somerset Maugham. Rain was made into three separate films, a silent in 1928 starring Gloria Swanson, and then in 1932 starring Joan Crawford as Miss Sadie Thompson, and finally in 1953 Rita Hayworth assumed the role of the prostitute stranded on the South Pacific Island of Pago, Pago in 1924. This much anticipated musical version with book by Sybille Pearson and music by Michael John LaChiusa is the second time Rain has been performed onstage, the first being a play in 1922. For the entire cast and creative team in San Diego this enterprise has been enormous. It is truly an outstanding ensemble headed by Eden Espinosa as Sadie, and the set designed by Mark Wendland is by itself worth the price of admission.
The tour of 42ND STREET recently performed at Wausau's Grand Theater. But despite its many virtues, 42ND STREET never really 'clicked.'
