"Swan Lake" - one of the most fantastic and perfect creations of art, perhaps the most famous ballet in the world. His music and choreography has long been regarded as a recognized masterpiece of world ballet, one of the great achievements of Russian culture. A White Swan will forever remain a symbol of Russian ballet, a symbol of its beauty and grandeur.

The history of "Swan Lake" began in 1875, when commissioned by the Bolshoi Theater young but already famous composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote the music for the ballet: "At the invitation of the Moscow Directorate of writing music for the ballet" Swan Lake. " I took up this work in part for the sake of money, which requires, in part because I have long wanted to try his hand at this kind of music "(Tchaikovsky, in a letter to Rimsky-Korsakov). Handling the composer of this level (and by that time Tchaikovsky already created four symphonies, the now famous Piano Concerto and the opera "Eugene Onegin") was not usual for that time. In the Imperial theaters for this kind of creativity existed established composers - Cesare Pugni, Ludwig Minkus, later Riccardo Drigo. Tchaikovsky did not set himself the task of "revolution" in the ballet. With his characteristic modesty, he carefully studied ballet scores, trying not to break with tradition and set the shape of ballet performances, inside satiate their musical basis of high richness. But now it is recognized that it is the "Swan Lake" ballet has opened the domestic unprecedented musical horizons, and subsequently developed by Tchaikovsky and his followers in this area.

Music was composed from May 1875 to April 1876. At the heart of the ballet - a fantastic story of knightly times. There are many opinions about his literary sources: call Heinrich Heine, German storyteller Johann Muzeusa, Russian fairy tale about a girl, swans and even Alexander Pushkin, but the story itself is quite independent. The idea probably belonged to the composer, but the author of the libretto considered inspector Vladimir Begichev Moscow theaters and ballet dancer Vasily Geltser.

The premiere performance was held on 20 February 1877, but, alas, was extremely unfortunate. Responsibility for the failure of the public entrusted the choreographer and stage direction Wenzel, not praised contemporaries and the first performer of the main party of Pauline Karpakovu.

In those years, the ballet was dominated by the type of monumental ceremonial or entertainment performance. Devoid of dramatic unity of design, ballet splits into separate rooms divertissements, the main emphasis was placed on sumptuous costumes, stage effects and virtuoso solo variations dancers. The creation of this type of play helped sometimes brilliant, but on the whole surface and exemplary music by Cesare Pugni and Ludwig Minkus, it relied on an eclectic choreography French choreographer Arthur Saint-Leon. His faithful follower choreographer Reisinger, referring to the first ballet by Tchaikovsky, the reform did not guess that carried "Swan Lake" - a ballet symphonic composer. He staged the old, familiar canons. Unfortunately, the failure of this production and cast a shadow on the ballet itself, and for a long time, none of choreographers to it did not address.

Everything changed after the death of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. In 1893, at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, it was decided the revival of "Swan Lake". During the processing of the libretto took the composer's brother Modest Tchaikovsky and director of the Imperial Theatres Ivan Vsevolozhsky. From Tchaikovsky's music experienced conductor Riccardo Drigo put together a brand new product. A renowned choreographer choreography divided by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, his disciple.

The premiere, which began its glorious history, took place at the Mariinsky Theatre January 15, 1895. It is this statement was recognized lyrical apex Russian ballet.

It is generally accepted that it was Marius Petipa created a unique choreography of the ballet, but true Russian and melodious made his humble assistant maitre, Lev Ivanov. That he is the perfect setting in choreographic terms of the famous swan scenes. It was he who coined the enchanted girls tunic with crossed hands and bowed their heads, in which the viewer instantly divined silhouette folded wings of a bird. It Lev Ivanov created a subtly attractive and touching the world Lake swans. Marius Petipa staged scenes belong to the same court balls and court festivities, intricate weave of waltzes, Spanish, Hungarian, Polish dances. White swan queen, composed by Ivanov, Petipa contrasted black double Odile, creating the stunning "black" pas de deux of the second act.

Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov for the first time felt the innovation ballet music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, her ability and the right - on par with the symphony - reveals the inner for actions embody the characters of the ballet in their interaction and development. Staging claimed a new form of ballet - Symphony Ballet. Amazed contemporaries throughout his brilliance brought meaning and significance of the reforms committed by Tchaikovsky in the ballet, which has since committing his triumphal procession through the scenes of the world.
