Act 1.

Beginning 1960. Transatlantic liner.

Lisa sails to Brazil with her husband - a German diplomat Walter. Accidentally she sees on the boat woman like Martha, who is considered dead. Lisa so alarmed by the flood of memories that her husband recognized that the matron was in Auschwitz. Walter feared a diplomatic scandal. Lisa asks the steward to find out who and where this woman.

1944 th. Auschwitz.

Among the prisoners - Martha. Lisa assigns it to his assistant to supervise other prisoners. Warden finds a note in Polish. Martha forced to translate it. To hide the forthcoming uprising, Martha says that it is her love letter to Tadeusz, her fiance.

Act 2.

Tadeusz - a violinist, as a prisoner of Auschwitz. His forced to choose a violin on which he will have to play at a concert favorite waltz Commandant. Tadeusz meets Martha, they know each other. Lisa says that, but in violation of the regulations allows them to speak privately.

Tadeusz makes jewelry for SS officers. On one of the medallions Lisa sees the image of the Madonna with the face of Martha. It offers Tadeusz meet again with Martha, but he refuses, not wanting to stay in front of Lisa in debt.

Martha's birthday, she turns 20 years old. Lisa is Martha and said that Tadeusz refused to meet with her. March convinced that Tadeusz did the right thing.

The guards read out the list of female prisoners sentenced to death. Though Martha's number is not called, she wants to join the doomed. But Lisa stops Martha: she needs to hear a concert by Tadeusz.
