"Hansel and Gretel" is the most popular opera by German composer Engelbert Humperdinka (1854-1921). E. Humperdinck studied composition at the Cologne and Munich and traveled to Italy, where in 1881 he met with Richard Wagner and was invited to Bayreuth. There's Humperdinck assisted Wagner in the preparation for publication of the score of the Opera "Parsifal". In 1893, the Engelbert Humperdinck has put in Weimar Opera "Hansel and Gretel" ("Hansel und Gretel", on the Russian stage was also named "Vania and Masha") based on the Brothers Grimm, which immediately won recognition.
