Winner of the 1972 Tony for "Best New Musical" (yes, it beat Grease) this rock musical, with book by John Guare and Mel Shapiro, lyrics by Guare and music by Galt MacDermot, is based on the Shakespeare comedy of the same name. Composter Galt MacDermot most notably wrote the music for the legendary musical, Hair. With Two Gents... he offers a rock musical with the same liveliness and soul. The plot follows Shakespeare's original story: It centers on lifelong friends Proteus and Valentine as they leave their rural hometown Verona to experience life in urban Milan. Capturing the unmistakable feelings of the 20th centure post-Woodstock era, playwrights Guare and Shapiro retain Shakespeare's comedy and spirit but re-imagine the tale in a time of profound transition, with multicultural exuberance and charm.
