Key work for the comprehension of the culture of the 20th century, Salome confirmed Strauss among the principal German composers of his time. Taken from the poem by Oscar Wilde, the drama, which debuted in Dresden in 1905 after being refused for reasons of censorship in Vienna, was tremendously successful, also due to the curiosity for the scandalous reworking of the biblical subject. In the visionary production by Schweigkofler, who moves the setting to modern times, an old Herod is presented ever more hungry for power and compelled by his sex drive to the point where he compromises the basic principles of the nation.
