Cyprus. Otello returns triumphant from his battle against the Turks. Cassio's promotion to captain arouses the jealousy of Jago, who plots of rid himself of his rival. He purloins a handkerchief belonging to Desdemona, Otello's wife, and uses it as proof of her infidelity with Cassio. Otello, mad with jealousy, kills her before realizing he has been tricked.
