Graduation performance by the Kraków State Drama School's Department of Dance Theatre in Bytom. The premiere of this version of Swan Lake took place on 17 November 2011 at the drama school's Bytom department. The director and choreographer is Idan Cohen; this is what he says about the production:
"My vision of Swan Lake appeals to other aspects and values of beauty and aesthetics than the one presented in the famous version choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. It recounts and invokes all that is usually considered to be normal and expected behaviour. Swan Lake is one of the most famous and most familiar shows in Western culture, it is an unlimited source of ideas, aesthetics, and associations. It is a strong psychological aspect in the creative process and the leading issue of identity, behaviour and value in every personal history".
"The swan, or rather the hybridisation of animal and human, masculinity and femininity, humanity and animal urges, provides inspiration for the creative process in this defined arena filled with instincts, passion, and dreams".
"I am fascinated with bringing different, marginal and alternative images of beauty, romance and cultural behaviour onto the stage - and that makes for a better point of reference than Swan Lake presenting the picture of romance and beauty that endures in our collective awareness. The work on our version does not imitate the original Swan Lake but shows it as a cultural icon created together with the students of the Department of Dance Theatre. This creative process seeks those values in Swan Lake that are important in life, in experiencing theatre and, first and foremost, dance. We expose the world of dance as it is today - with its pleasures, hardships, successes, and necessary sacrifices".
