Annual choreography workshops were brought to the Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera in 2009 by Krzysztof Pastor, soon after he was appointed director of the Polish National Ballet. His guiding principle was to give dancers the opportunity for a choreographic debut as well as releasing their initiative in other areas of producing a ballet show. Each year those who want to take part in the project are given free rein regarding the concept, organization, production, and promotion of their own ballet evening using their own resources. Everyone works on their workshop projects in their spare time, receiving the theatre’s technical assistance where necessary.
The four workshops held so far have involved 14 of the Polish National Ballet’s artists: Eduard Bablidze, Barbara Bartnik, Robert Bondara, Micha? Chró?cielewski, Zbigniew Czapski-K?oda, Tomasz Fabia?ski, Anna Hop, Arkadiusz Go?ygowski, Anna Lorenc, Lachlan Phillips, Jacek Tyski, Karol Urba?ski, George Williamson, and Natalia Wojciechowska.
The workshops always yield interesting artistic results, opening the way to further choreographic projects for the most talented and energetic of the debuting artists. For example, Robert Bondara’s When You End and I Begin... to music by Pawe? Szyma?ski and Claude Debussy’s Afternoon of a Faun choreographed by Jacek Tyski are two pieces that were subsequently added to our ballet company’s chamber repertoire. Robert Bondara later designed two large productions: The Captive Mind based on Mi?osz at the Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz, and his own original project, Persona, with the Polish National Ballet. In the 2012/13 season - at Krzysztof Pastor’s recommendation - he will stage a new ballet, about the famous Lithuanian painter and composer Mikalojus ?iurlionis, at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre in Vilnius. Jacek Tyski received the opportunity to prepare his choreography In Search of Colours, to the music of Gra?yna Bacewicz, with our company. In the 2011/12 season he worked on an educational programme called Alice in Wonderland at the Teatr Wielki, while the Polish National Ballet will perform his new show inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet on the chamber stage in autumn 2013. After working with our company for a year, George Williamson returned to the UK where he staged Stravinsky’s The Firebird with the English National Ballet and is continuing his career in dance and choreography in his native country.
Krzysztof Pastor is always waiting for new works by Warsaw’s young choreographers and for new creative talents to reveal themselves in his ballet company. That is why the Polish National Ballet’s annual workshop project will also continue in the coming years.
