In addition, she originated the role of Elphaba in the first national tour of Wicked and in 2010 starred as Grizabella in the Municipal Opera Production production of Cats. Also that year, she starred as Sonia Walsk alongside Jason Alexander in the Reprise Theatre Company's production of They're Playing Our Song.

Today in 2007, The Pirate Queen opened at the Hilton Theatre (now the FoxwoodsTheatre), where it ran for 85 performances. The Pirate Queen is a musical written by Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil, best known for their adaptation of Les Miserables. It is based on the life and adventures of the 16th century Irish chieftain and pirate Grainne O'Malley, who was one of the last Irish clan leaders to resist the English conquest of Gaelic Ireland. The cast featured Stephanie J. Block as the title character and Linda Balgord, who was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for her performance as Queen Elizabeth I.

Scott Alan's recent EP titled 'Anything Worth Holding on To,' including songs written and performed by Alan himself, is now available on Amazon and iTunes. A lyric video was just released for 'I'm In Pain' (featuring Shoshana Bean) and you can check it out below!

This week our spotlight is on Paul Loesel and Scott Burkell, whose original musical LMNOP received developmental productions at the University of Michigan and Goodspeed Musicals (Norma Terris Theatre). The show, produced with Third Coast Creative, will open in April 2015 at TUTS Underground in Houston, TX.

Executive Producers Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell, Pippin) and Bruce Cohen (American Beauty, Milk, Silver Linings Playbook) just presented an all-star lineup for Uprising of Love: A Benefit Concert for Global Equality night, September 15th at Broadway's Gershwin Theatre. Vulture.com welcomed actress Stephanie J. Block and composer Jason Robert Brown for 'The Art of Songwriting' at the first Vulture Festival, a weekend of pop culture events in New York City on May 10 and 11. During the event, Brown spoke to New York magazine theater critic Jesse Green about composing for musicals and played and sang some of his tunes with additional vocal accompaniment by Block. Nominations for the 2014 Annual Drama Desk Awards were announced last month at 54 Below, and earlier this week, the honorees appeared at the 2014 Drama Desk Nominees Reception. BroadwayWorld's Richard Ridge was there and caught interviews with some of the featured actors nominated in the Musical categories, including Joshua Henry, Laura Osnes, Danny Burstein, Stephanie J. Block and more!

Editor's Note: I've known composer Scott Alan for almost as long as BroadwayWorld.com has been in existence. We met very shortly after the web site started, and were excited to showcase one of his first songs, 'Never Neverland (Fly Away)' at our first ever concert at Joe's Pub (sung by the wonderful Stephanie J. Block). I was intrigued by the album after seeing a preview of the cover art (by the uber-talented Logan Hicks), and even more curious to hear the album itself, his first to feature just himself instead of the usual line-up of talent from Broadway and beyond. There's always something special about hearing a composer sing his own songs, but I was still unprepared when he shared with me a preview copy for a first listen. What I didn't expect as I hit play was for it to 'ruin' my entire afternoon, as I found myself both unable to concentrate on anything else, and, as it completed, I quickly hit 'repeat' to bring me back to the first track and listen all over again. Then, I wrote him my first fan letter, and asked him if he'd share both a track (of my choosing) as well as a note explaining the origins of both the album, and the song.
