Artist Mel Chin's Animatronic Sculpture Officially Unveiled Today In Times Square

Times Square Arts, No Longer Empty and Queens Museum present artist Mel Chin's large-scale sculpture Wake and companion mixed reality piece Unmoored - developed with Microsoft - to explore a surrealistic experience of rising waters in Times Square. The works will be active July 11 to September 5 at the Broadway Plaza between 46th Street and 47th Street as part of Mel Chin: All Over the Place. Visitors will be invited to engage with the sixty-foot animatronic installation Wake, which evokes the hull of a 19th century shipwreck crossed with the skeletal remains of a marine mammal. Viewers can simultaneously explore the blending of physical and digital worlds in Unmoored through a Microsoft HoloLens headset (July 11-13) or their mobile phones. There will be a press opening event on Wednesday, July 11th at 1:00 p.m., after which the installation and mixed reality component will be open to the public.
TimesSquare Portal Brings the World to Times Square

In partnership with Shared_Studios, Times Square Arts brings the TimesSquare_Portal to the Broadway Plaza between 46th & 47th Street, allowing Times Square visitors to interact with people across thirty locations in twenty countries as though they are in the same room. The interactive public art installation will run from October 10 to November 21, 2017. All are invited to book free timed reservations in the Portal at www.TimesSquarePortal.com. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Lattice Domain Turns Times Square Psychedelic

In partnership with Upfor Gallery, Times Square Arts presents artist MSHR's Convolution Weave~Lattice Domain on Times Square's electronic billboards from 11:57 p.m. to midnight every night in August. This project is a part of Midnight Moment, a monthly presentation by The Times Square Advertising Coalition (TSAC) and Times Square Arts. MSHR's work is also currently featured in the Past Skin exhibition at MoMA PS1 (open through September 10, 2017) and The World is Sound at the Rubin Museum (open through January 18, 2018), and will appear in the Sonic Arcade exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Design (September 14, 2017 - February 25, 2018).
TIME SPY Brings a New Dimension to the Electronic Billboards of Times Square

In partnership with the Audemars Piguet Art Commission, Times Square Arts presents artist Sun Xun's Time Spy on Times Square's electronic billboards from 11:57 p.m. to midnight every night in July. This project is a part of Midnight Moment, a monthly presentation by The Times Square Advertising Coalition (TSAC) and Times Square Arts. One of China's most prominent young artists, Sun Xun created Time Spy for the second Audemars Piguet Art Commission in partnership with Sean Kelly Gallery, Edouard Malingue Gallery and Shanghart Gallery as part of a large-scale immersive multimedia installation first presented during Art Basel in Miami Beach in December 2016.
Aman Mojadidi's ONCE UPON A PLACE Brings Phone Booths and Immigrant Histories to Times Square

Times Square Arts and artist Aman Mojadidi bring Once Upon a Place, an interactive public art installation that creates a platform for immigrant voices, to Duffy Square (46th Street and 7th Avenue) from June 27- September 5. Visitors will be invited to open the door of one of three repurposed telephone booths, pick up the receiver, and listen to oral histories of immigration from the newest New Yorkers. Visitors can also open the phone book inside each booth to read more about the storytellers' communities both here in New York and the countries they have traveled from, and to leave behind a part of their own story if they wish. The installation will include 70 different stories that will last anywhere between 2 and 15 minutes. There will be a press opening ceremony on Tuesday, June 27th at 11:00 am after which the installation will be open to the public.

New York - Times Square Arts has announced that The Office for Creative Research is the winner of this year's annual Times Square Valentine Heart Design Competition, curated by the Urban Design Forum. Over the last nine years, the Times Square Alliance has invited architecture and design firms to submit proposals for a romantic public art installation celebrating Valentine's Day in Times Square. This year's winning design, We Were Strangers Once Too, will be unveiled on February 7, and remain on view for approximately one month at Father Duffy Square, between 46th and 47th Streets and a few feet away from TKTS and the Red Steps.
