Rubicon Theatre Company celebrates Black History Month with THE DEVIL'S MUSIC: THE LIFE AND BLUES OF BESSIE SMITH, starring singer and actress Miche Braden of the original Off-Broadway production (named one of the 10 Best Off-Broadway productions of the year by the N.Y. Daily Times). Described by CBC as a, "bawdy, bluesy, boozy rollicking night out at the theatre," the show follows the life, loves and career of blues and jazz singer Bessie Smith, called the "Empress of the Blues."

Court Theatre, under the leadership of Marilyn F. Vitale Artistic Director Charles Newell and Executive Director Stephen J. Albert, announces the extension of Blues for an Alabama Sky by Pearl Cleage, directed by Ron OJ Parson. Blues for an Alabama Sky now runs through February 19, 2017 at Court Theatre, 5535 S. Ellis Avenue in Chicago.

Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm's new play Hooded, or Being Black for Dummies, receiving its world premiere with Mosaic Theatre Company, examines the dangers of identity, prejudice and identity politics from a variety of angles. This is an unforgettable, complex study in identity that for all of its tricks and turns is one of the more psychologically, spiritually rich plays you are likely to see on the stage.

AN EVENING WITH PHYLLIS HYMAN, a world premiere musical the creators of the Broadway bound musical Mighty Real: A Fabulous Sylvester Musical, will play the final performances of its limited engagement this weekend, with shows on Saturday, February 4 at 8 pm and Sunday February 5 at 2 & 7 PM. NYU Tisch School of the Arts today announced its 2017 gala, to be held on Monday, April 3, 2017, at Cipriani 42nd Street. The 2017 gala, themed Aspire, Inspire will feature performances by current and former students of the iconic arts institution, which is celebrating over 50 years of excellence in the arts.

Western Connecticut State University will host 1,100 students and faculty from colleges and universities in Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts at the Region One festival of the 49th annual Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF), January 31-February 4, 2017. This is the fourth of eight weekly celebrations of excellence and achievement of theater in higher education. Individual participants and full-scale productions are eligible for awards recognizing excellence in the art and craft of theater. Individual awardees and representatives from selected productions will be brought to Washington, D.C., for an expenses-paid trip to the national festival, April 18-22, 2017 at the Kennedy Center. A comprehensive listing of awardees will be announced in mid-March 2017.

Primitive Grace Theater Ensemble will present the World Premiere of FRINGE OF HUMANITY written and directed by Obie Award winner and SAG Award nominee Paul Calderon. Co-starring David Zayas (Dexter), performances begin January 11 at Access Theater. Opening is slated for tonight, January 19th.

Sula & The Noise, with songs written and sung by Pulitzer-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, makes music with a distinctly Afro-Americana vibe. Formed in 2016, they will make their Brooklyn debut on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at 7 p.m. at JACK.

Rivendell Theatre Ensemble (RTE), Chicago's only Equity theatre dedicated to producing new work with women at the core, announces the world premiere of Winter by Julie Jensen. The production, co-directed by RTE members Megan Carney and Mark Ulrich,runs January 7 - February 11, 2017, at Rivendell Theatre Ensemble, 5779 N.
