In response to popular demand and critical acclaim, Soho Rep. and The Play Company, in association with John Adrian Selzer, announce a second extension of the U.S. premiere of debbie tucker green's generations to November 23. The production, which opened on October 12, was declared a New York Times Critics' Pick by Charles Isherwood who called it 'a singular theatrical experience,' noting 'that the play reverberates in your mind and heart long afterward, like the taste of a great meal that you savor for days.' In her Time Out New York Critic's Pick review, Helen Shaw called it 'a devastating aria,' while Hilton Als in The New Yorker called it 'a miniature spectacle' that 'is filled with so much warmth and thought that the feeling it imparts lasts for a long time after you've left the theatre.' The production, which opens on October 12, reunites the playwright with director Leah C. Gardiner, who worked together on the OBIE Award-winning 2011 production of born bad. generations features a 13-person choir led by music director Bongi Duma (The Lion King). The cast includes Shyko Amos (An Octoroon), Mamoudou Athie, Khail Toi Bryant (The Lion King), Ntombikhona Dlamini (Sarafina!), Thuli Dumakude (The Lion King, Poppie Nongena), Jonathan Peck (The Lion in Winter) and Michael Rogers (born bad, Breakfast With Mugabe). The production, September 30-October 26, reunites the playwright with director Leah C. Gardiner, who worked together on the OBIE Award-winning 2011 production of born bad. generations features a 12-person community chorus led by music director Bongi Duma (The Lion King). JEWISH PLAYS PROJECT and Artistic Director David Winitsky, are pleased to announce the exciting line-up of OPEN: The Festival of New Jewish Theatre. The festival officially opened Tuesday night with a special presentation of True Bible Studies by Robert Askins, directed by Benjamin Kamine as part of Into the Night: Downtown's Tikkun Leil Shavuot at The 14th Street Y. The line-up includes readings of new plays by Ben Gassman, Tom Block, M.J. Kaufman, Lenelle Moise, Lila Feinberg and the featured workshop production of G-d's Honest Truth by Renee Calarco, directed by David Winitsky. OPEN: The Festival of New Jewish Theatre plays a limited engagement June 13th through June 29th, 2014 at The Theater at the 14th Street Y (344 East 14th Street, New York, NY 10003). Artistic Director Sarah Benson, to May 24. Performances of An Octoroon will now take place April 23-May 24 (see schedule above) at Soho Rep. This year, "Communal Spaces: a garden play festival" will share its final weekend with the LUNGS Harvest Art Festival, a multidimensional arts festival that reflects the creative spirit of the neighborhood and the integral part that community gardens play in the culture and life of Lower East Side. Last year, Communal Spaces' play 'Don't Weep for Me, Willow Tree' was featured as part of the festival. This year, all the plays will be part of the weekend of arts events. Admission is free.
