Broadway Guest Artists Announced for Musical Theatre Preparatory Program!

Learn from Broadway stars this summer at Playhouse on Park! Broadway actors Douglas Lyons and Jason Gotay visit the Playhouse as guest teaching artists for the Musical Theatre Preparatory Program. Running from July 10-July 21, this two week full-day intensive musical theatre program introduces and prepares young actors (3rd-8th grade) for future training and/or performance in music, dance and theater. Additionally, both Lyons and Gotay will hold evening master classes for ages 16 and up.

On September 16th, 2016 Masterworks Broadway released the World Premiere Recording of the award winning new hit Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical. Written by Douglas Lyons, Melvin Tunstall, III and Greg Borowsky, Polkadots is a new musical inspired by the true events of the Civil Rights pioneers Ruby Bridges and The Little Rock Nine. The album's release was celebrated in a concert presentation at The Lindeman (508 w42) on Monday Oct 24th, 2016.

Today, the National Civil Rights Museum announced recipients of The Freedom Award, the museum's signature event that honors outstanding individuals for their significant contributions to civil and human rights. This year's honorees are Benjamin Crump, civil rights attorney; Tawakkol Karman, Yemeni human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate; The Honorable Damon Jerome Keith, longest serving judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit Court; Soledad O'Brien, journalist and executive producer; and Bryan Stevenson, attorney and social justice activist.

Southern Rep has announced that it will accept submissions for The Ruby Prize, effective immediately. The $10,000 annual award is named in honor of Ruby Bridges, who showed incredible perseverance in the face of formidable obstacles. The Ruby Prize seeks to support women playwrights of color whose work expands the reach of American theatre in the face of formidable obstacles.

Southern Rep has announced that it will host its annual WORK HARD PLAY HARD from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm June 23rd, 2014 at Il Posto (4607 Dryades Street). WORK HARD PLAY HARD will feature live music, an all-you-can-eat buffet, an open bar, and a silent auction/raffle of donated items and services from local artists and businesses, with all proceeds benefitting the job creation, professional development and artistic empowerment efforts that are part of Southern Rep's 'New Play Development' mission: 6x6, and 3x3: THE ONE ACTS.
