Odyssey Opera Presents Boston Premiere of LE CID in One­Night Concert Tonight

Odyssey Opera, a Boston-­??based opera company dedicated to exploring the full spectrum of adventurous repertoire, presents the Boston premiere of one of France's great operas, Le Cid (1885), composed by Jules Massenet (1842-­??1912). A rarity that has been sadly absent from opera houses worldwide in the 20th and 21st centuries, Le Cid is rarely produced in the United States. With its grand themes of honor, love, bravery, and sacrifice, Le Cid encompasses the sweep of historical epic and the depths of the heart. Conducted by Gil Rose, this one-­??night-­??only performance breathes new dramatic life into the legendary medieval Spanish warrior Rodrigue, known as "Le Cid" ("The Lord") (played by American tenor Paul Groves.)

Odyssey Opera, a Boston-­??based opera company dedicated to exploring the full spectrum of adventurous repertoire, today announced THE BRITISH INVASION, a month-­??long opera festival of fully-­??staged productions of works by English composers. From May 17-­??June 20, Boston opera lovers will have the unique opportunity to choose from four evening-­??length programs encompassing nine diverse operatic works, including the Boston premiere of Vaughan Williams's Sir John in Love, a double bill of Walton's The Bear and Sullivan's The Zoo, five compelling monodramas, and Ade?s's masterpiece of modern cultural commentary, Powder Her Face. Last year Beethoven's Ninth Symphony had been scheduled for the week that may well have been the most horrific in Boston's history. The city closed down, and Beethoven's great Ode to Joy was silenced. During what transpired that week, and then in the weeks and months after, the city demonstrated its courage, resilience, and indomitable spirit in the most moving of ways. And now that time has passed, Mr. Zander and the Philharmonic are putting the Ninth on the schedule once again, as a special added concert that will take place twice in Symphony Hall and once in Mechanics Hall in Worcester.

Boston Philharmonic to Open 2013-14 Season with BEETHOVEN 9th, 10/4

Scheduled for the final concert of last season, but cancelled because of the Marathon lock-down, the BEETHOVEN 9th will open the Boston Philharmonic 2013-14 season on October 4th in Symphony Hall. Benjamin Zander will conduct, with the Chorus Pro Musica and soloists Michele Johnson, Sarah Heltzel, Yeghishe Manucharyan and Robert Honeysucker.

AT THE RIVER, KISS ME, KATE and More Set for Boston Landmarks Orchestra's 2013 Season

The Boston Landmarks Orchestra (LO) announces its 2013 summer season at the DCR's historic Hatch Shell on Boston's Esplanade along the Charles River, and additional concerts and educational activities in Boston's neighborhoods. Concerts at the Hatch Shell take place every Wednesday at 7 pm, beginning July 17 and running through August 28. Neighborhood event times vary. All concerts are free.
