BWW Review: Well-performed, But Uninspired A LITTLE NIGHT Music At Lakeland Civic Theatre
by Roy Berko - Sep 12, 2018

Like much of the works of Stephen Sondheim, from the start, 'Little Night Music' proves to be a different type of musical. Rather than a traditional overture, one-by-one, a quintet of singers, who will act like a Greek chorus throughout the production commenting on varying situations, introducing the audience to characters and clarify the plot's goings on, enter, tuning up their voices. Eventually, they blend into an overture composed of different songs from the score.

BWW Review: URINETOWN, Bad Title, Fun Show, Flushed With Success @ Blank Canvas
by Roy Berko - Dec 6, 2017

'Urinetown: The Musical' opened on Broadway in 2001, but its path from lyricist Greg Kotis traveling Europe, encountering a pay toilet, getting an idea for a story, joining with Mark Hollman, writing the lyrics together, Hollman writing the music, previewing the show at the New York's Fringe Festival, and getting it on Broadway, was filled with pitfalls. Mainly, producers were turned off by the title.

Blank Canvas Theatre Announces the Cast of URINETOWN The Musical
by BWW News Desk - Nov 10, 2017

In today's world where hope seems increasingly like a political action, the themes of this play - the misuse of power, populist revolution, the uncertainty of environmental sustainability - seem as necessary today as when the show was created.

BWW Review: FLOYD COLLINS Melodramatically Spelunkers Into Eternal Fame at Blank Canvas
by Roy Berko - Mar 13, 2017

'Floyd Collins,' now on stage at Blank Canvas Theatre, isn't your typical musical. There is no dancing, no show-stopper production numbers, no intentional humor, no subplot, no 'I wish for' numbers. It's a tale of simple folks, a story focused on a man with an obsession to spelunker (explore caves), the power of sensationalism in the press, and the role of family and faith.

by Roy Berko - Aug 1, 2016

The 1984 movie Footloose became a cult movie among teens and young twenties, not only because it showcased a rebel with a cause standing up for his rights, and displaying victory over misguided-adults, but because of the performance of Kevin Bacon as Ren McCormick.

BWW Reviews: THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA Glows Brightly at Lakeland
by Roy Berko - Feb 2, 2014

Lakeland Civic Theatre's THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA is a special night of musical theatre. To appreciate the show, the viewer must put aside any attitude of what a musical should look and sound like and embrace this creatively 'different' approach. I, for one, loved the story, the music and the production, and would declare it a MUST SEE!
