Today in 1978, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas opened at the 46th Street Theatre (now the Richard Rodgers Theatre), where it ran for 1584 performances. The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is a musical with a book by Texas author Larry L. King and Peter Masterson and music and lyrics by Carol Hall. It is based on a story by King that was inspired by the real-life Chicken Ranch in La Grange, Texas. The original Broadway production was directed by Peter Masterson and Tommy Tune and choreographed by Tune and Thommie Walsh.

Pittsburgh CLO, a leading non-profit musical theater organization located in downtown Pittsburgh, announced today that it has been awarded a four-year, $800,000 grant from the PNC Foundation to strengthen and expand the CLO Academy of Musical Theater. The funds will support the Children's School, a program of the Pittsburgh CLO Academy, which teaches children ages 3 to 10 the fundamentals of musical theater. The school will be renamed The PNC Children's School.

William Shakespeare's famed star-crossed lovers bare their passion Uptown this summer as The Classical Theatre of Harlem (Ty Jones, producing artistic director; David Roberts, managing director) presents Romeo n Juliet at the Richard Rodgers Amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park. On June 10, 2014, producer and director, Caleb Ryan and a cast of rising stars on Broadway revived the timeless music of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart in the one night only performance of We'll Take Manhattan, all to benefit Operation Smile. New World Stages played host to the performance and exclusive after party with industry heavy hitters in attendance including Tony Award winners Billy Porter and Michael Starobin, Grammy winner Kurt Elling, Two Time Tony Award Nominee Laura Osnes as well as television personality Chenoa Maxwell from the OWN network's hit television show Love in the City.

I had never heard of the television musical ANDROCLES AND THE LION until Masterworks Broadway announced they'd be releasing the cast recording. NBC originally aired the broadcast on November 16, 1967, and it was met with mixed reviews. Shortly thereafter, the show vanished. Now, with Masterworks Broadway recent release, this entirely forgotten gem is seeing the light of day again.
