    The Classical Theatre of Harlem's annual summer Uptown Shakespeare in the Park production (in partnership with City Park Foundation's SummerStage Festival) is off to a rousing start! From a visit during tech with a local student group, to our opening weekend, the stage is set for a great summer! Last night, over 650 people witnessed the magic of our first preview performance of The Tempest at the Richard Rodgers Amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park, directed by Carl Cofield. (more...)

    Today in 1976, the second Broadway revival of Pal Joey opened at the Circle in the SquareTheatre, where it ran for 73 performances. Pal Joey is a musical with a book by John O'Hara (from his novel of the same title) and music and lyrics by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart based on a character and situations O'Hara created in a series of short stories published in The New Yorker. The original 1940 Broadway production was directed by George Abbott and starred Gene Kelly. There have been several revivals since, including a 2008-09 Broadway run, and a 1957 film adaptation starring Frank Sinatra, Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak. The 1976 cast featured: Christopher Chadman (Joey), Harold Gary (Mike), Terri Treas (Kid), Janie Sell (Gladys), and Gail Benedict (Gail). (more...)

    Today in 1986, Arsenic and Old Lace opened at the 46th Street Theatre (now the Richard Rogers Theatre) where it ran for 221 performances. Arsenic and Old Lace is a play by American playwright Joseph Kesselring, written in 1939. It has become best known through the film adaptation starring Cary Grant and directed by Frank Capra. The play is a farcical black comedy revolving around Mortimer Brewster, a drama critic who must deal with his crazy, homicidal family and local police in Brooklyn, NY, as he debates whether to go through with his recent promise to marry the woman he loves.     Four-time Grammy nominee, singer/pianist Karrin Allyson, has confirmed the 9/18 release of 'Many a New Day (Karrin Allyson Sings Rodgers & Hammerstein)'. The 14-song collection features Allyson's romantic, sly and swinging take on songs that have become part of our cultural fabric, from 'Oh, What a Beautiful Morning' to 'Happy Talk' to 'I Cain't Say No' and numerous others. A full track listing follows. The collection, which marks the singer's debut on the Motéma label, features the distinctive pairing of Kenny Barron on piano and John Patitucci on bass (only the second time the two have recorded together.)
