BWW Reviews: Out Front On Main Turns Back Time With JEFFREY
by Jeffrey Ellis - Aug 23, 2011

Directed by Buddy R. Jones, Jeffrey is like a nostalgic trip to the 1990s for older audience members, many of whom remember the tenor of those times intimately. Intelligently, Jones approaches Jeffrey as a period piece, ensuring that the design aesthetic for the show helps to capture the underlying confusion and questions of the advent of the AIDS era. And by casting two longtime friends - Manus and Richard Browder in the pivotal roles of Jeffrey and Sterling - he gives the production a sturdy underpinning that makes the story funnier and more poignant.

First Night's Top Ten of 2010: Nashville's Best Choreographers
by Jeffrey Ellis - Jan 17, 2011

Think about it: What if you were watching The King and I and when Anna and the King of Siam started to sing 'Shall We Dance' and they just stood there, it just wouldn't have much of an impact, would it? Or if all those budding chorus members in A Chorus Line just stood around and talked about dancing but never did even the most basic shuffle-ball-change...sounds pretty bleak, doesn't it? That's where choreographers come into the picture; they collaborate with the director, the music director and the cast members to create movement that elevates every musical comedy. Without them, the action remains stagebound and static. A choreographer allows your heart to soar along with the performers onstage, making musical comedy all the more compelling and transformative. These talented men and women created remarkable and memorable work in 2010 as First Night's Top Choreographers...

BWW Reviews: BIG RIVER from Tennessee Repertory Theatre
by Jeffrey Ellis - Mar 23, 2010

But three other individuals are perhaps most responsible for the overall delight that is Tennessee Rep's 25th Anniversary season production: director Rene Dunshee Copeland, whose imaginative work helps to re-invent this musical on a basis that is at once more intimate while, somehow, is on a grander scale; music director Paul Carrol Binkley, whose concept for performing the work's music gives it the ideal down-home feel that only a band of expert Nashville players can give it; and design genius Gary Hoff, who transforms Johnson's black box space into something we've never seen in that venue before - the proscenium theatre you've only seen in your mind's eye - and who, in so doing, elevates Nashville theatrical design beyond its previous limits, fashioning it into something of opulently epic proportions.
