New York Live Arts hosted a light breakfast and media briefing on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, to declare 2014-15 The Year of James Baldwin, which will launch April 23 - 27.Curated by celebrated non-fiction writer Lawrence Weschler, in collaboration with New York Live Arts Executive Artistic Director Bill T. Jones, this five day festival-the second annual Live Ideas-will include lectures, panels, performances and a full range of artistic responses to the enduring pertinence of the work of the American essayist, novelist, playwright and social critic.

Cool carries a social charge of rebellious self-expression, charisma, edge and mystery. “American Cool” will feature 100 photographs of icons who have contributed an original artistic vision to American culture and are symbolic figures of their time. The exhibition will be open at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery Feb. 7 through Sept. 7.

New York Live Arts today announced that its second annual Live Ideas festival, entitled James Baldwin, This Time!, will take place April 23 - 27, 2014, and will center on the enduring pertinence of the work of the American essayist, novelist, playwright and social critic. Spanning the course of five days, James Baldwin, This Time! will include lectures, panels, performances and a full range of artistic responses. The festival will launch 'The Year of Baldwin,' a year-long celebration featuring Baldwin-inspired programming presented by a number of cultural institutions around the city on the occasion of what would have been the writer's 90th year.

The award is given to those who have made a distinctive contribution to the world of fashion by designing, promoting, or wearing fashion in a way that influences the public.

The Public Theater and Theatre for a New Audience have announced an additional one-week extension for the American premiere of GRASSES OF A THOUSAND COLORS, part of The Wallace Shawn-Andre Gregory Project, written by Wallace Shawn. Directed by Andre Gregory, GRASSES OF A THOUSAND COLORS opened on Monday, October 28 and will now run an additional week through Sunday, December 1.

On view in Brooklyn from today, October 25, 2013, through February 23, 2014, this spectacular overview of Gaultier's extensive oeuvre will include exclusive material not exhibited in previous venues of the tour, such as pieces from his recent haute couture and ready-to-wear collections and stage costumes worn by Beyonce.

The Public Theater and Theatre for a New Audience have announced a two-week extension today for the American premiere of GRASSES OF A THOUSAND COLORS, part of The Wallace Shawn-Andre Gregory Project, written by Wallace Shawn. Directed by Andre Gregory, GRASSES OF A THOUSAND COLORSbegins previews tonight and was originally scheduled to close on Sunday, November 10. It will now run an additional two weeks through Sunday, November 24, with an official press opening on Monday, October 28.

Art Institute's MAX KOZLOFF: CRITIC AND PHOTOGRAPHER Opens Tomorrow

In the 1960s and early 1970s, Max Kozloff (b. 1933) emerged as one of the leading critics and writers on modern art. By the mid-1970s he turned his attention to photography criticism and took up a camera to make his own work. Organized by the Art Institute of Chicago, Max Kozloff: Critic and Photographer, on view from October 5, 2013 through January 5, 2014 inGalleries 1-4, is a major retrospective that reveals the ways in which Kozloff's work as a writer shaped his vision behind the camera lens, and vice versa. The exhibition includes over 80 works, all drawn from the permanent collection of the Art Institute, including photographs by artists who have both inspired Kozloff's photography and served as the subjects of his writing. Accompanying the individual images are excerpts from Kozloff's critical pieces from 1976 to the present. Kozloff's own photographs are also included, while a reading room allows visitors to further study his work as a critic.

Activism and artistic practice intersect in Witness: Art and Civil Rights in the Sixties, a presentation of 103 works by 66 artists that is among the few exhibitions to explore how painting, sculpture, graphics, and photography not only responded to the political and social turmoil of the era but also helped to influence its direction. Debuting at the Brooklyn Museum, where it will be on view from March 7 through July 6, 2014, the touring exhibition marks the fiftieth anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the events leading to this historic moment, and the aftermath of the legislation.
