Theatre of Voices to Perform at Zankel Hall, 2/21

Carnegie Hall presents a rare performance of Karlheinz Stockhausen's powerful and influential 1968 modern vocal work Stimmung by the ensemble Theatre of Voices in Zankel Hall on Saturday, February 21 at 7:30 p.m. Theatre of Voices-comprised of singers Else Torp, Louise Skovbaech, Randi Pontoppidan, Wolodymyr Smishkewych, Chris Watson, and Jakob Bloch Jespersen-perform Stockhausen's seminal work for six amplified voices, the first major Western piece of music to utilize overtone singing, in which the note being sung is manipulated by the singer to produce more than one pitch at once. The technique is commonly found in Eastern singing styles, such as Mongolian and Tuvan throat singing.

Tenor Russell Thomas Leads NY Phil's Verdi Requiem, Conducted by Alan Gilbert, This Weekend

Tenor Russell Thomas will replace Brandon Jovanovich, who has withdrawn due to illness, in the New York Philharmonic performances of the Verdi Requiem, conducted by Music Director Alan Gilbert. The performances will also feature soprano Angela Meade (in her Philharmonic debut), mezzo-soprano Lilli Paasikivi, bass-baritone Eric Owens, and the New York Choral Artists, directed by Joseph Flummerfelt, this weekend, January 15, 2015, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, January 16 at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, January 17 at 8:00 p.m.

LA Phil Creative Chair John Adams leads the LA Phil New Music Group in an evening of edgy works by some of today's most avant-garde composers - HK Gruber, John Zorn and Olga Neuwirth - at Walt Disney Concert Hall, tonight, January 13, at 8 pm. The concert features performances by chansonnier Pieter Embrechts and countertenor Nathan Medley in a staged production by Chromatic, a Los Angeles-based production company led by director James Darrah.

Festival d'Aix-en-Provence's 67th Season to Feature World Premieres, French Premieres & More

The 67th season of the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, under the leadership of General Manager Bernard Foccroulle, will present the world premiere productions of operas by Handel and Mozart; the French premiere of Jonathan Dove's children's opera The Monster in the Maze led by Sir Simon Rattle with the London Symphony Orchestra; and a revival of director Robert Carsen's acclaimed 1991 Festival production of Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream. The Festival's major vocal presentations this season will also include Serbian composer Ana Sokolovi?'s unconventional one-act a capella opera Svadba (Marriage), and a double bill presenting Persephone,Stravinsky's melodrama for tenor, female narrator, choir, children's choir, dancers and orchestra, with Tchaikovsky's last opera, Iolanta.

2015 Opera News Awards Announces Five Honorees

OPERA NEWS Editor in Chief F. Paul Driscoll today announced the recipients of the 10th Annual Opera News Awards. This year's honorees—Piotr Beczala, Ferruccio Furlanetto, Sondra Radvanosky, Samuel Ramey and Teresa Stratas—will be feted at a black tie gala celebration on Sunday, April 19, 2015 at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Previous Opera News Award Winners Martina Arroyo,Gerald Finley and Susan Graham are among the presenters.

Jay Hunter Morris Stars in Houston Grand Opera's A CHRISTMAS CAROL World Premiere Tonight

American tenor Jay Hunter Morris will replace Anthony Dean Griffey in Houston Grand Opera's world premiere production of A Christmas Carol, it was announced today by HGO Artistic and Music Director Patrick Summers. Mr. Griffey has withdrawn for health reasons. The 90-minute opera, commissioned by HGO from composer Iain Bell and librettist Simon Callow, is written for a single singer performing the role of The Narrator. A Christmas Carol runs from tonight, December 5 through 21, 2014, at the Wortham Theater Center, and is suitable for ages 12 and up.

Park Avenue Armory to Launch 2015 Season with Sellars and Gray's FLEXN

Park Avenue Armory has commissioned dance pioneer Reggie "Regg Roc" Gray and visionary director Peter Sellars to create a performance piece that evolves the tradition of flex, the Brooklyn-born street dance. Characterized by sharp, rhythmic contortion, pausing, snapping, gliding, and animated showmanship, the flex form evolved from the Jamaican bruk-up style popular in the dance halls and reggae clubs of Brooklyn in the 1990s.
