Me and Orson Welles Character Card: Gretta Adler (Zoe Kazan)
by Robert Diamond
- Dec 3, 2009
Zoe Kazan was delighted to be cast by Richard Linklater. "I had known a lot of people who had worked with him and all of them had had nothing but the kindest things to say and they all turned out to be true. He's very easy-going and he's really hands-on as a director. He doesn't hold your hand or baby you, he let's you do the interpretation on your own and tells you what he needs and he's a lot of fun to work with.

Review - Uncle Vanya: Mr. Monotony
by Kristin Salaky
- Feb 17, 2009
If the blocked sight lines caused by Santo Loquasto's dominating set - the wooden skeleton of a Russian two-story country home - seem at first a bit of an annoyance in Classic Stage Company's engrossing and well-acted production of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, the wonderful moodiness his work helps create becomes more evident as the evening moves onward. With most of the action taking place on the porch pushed to the forefront, the audience can partially view the unseen business of others through thick structural beams. Or perhaps watch scenes with those not directly involved in the forefront. And while the clarity of your view depends on which of the three sections you're seated in, it seems intentional that nobody can tell exactly what is happening in one key moment.
Review - The Seagull: Accent On Youth
by Kristin Salaky
- Oct 11, 2008
While it's exceedingly doubtful that Kristin Scott Thomas' Madame Arkadina could play a 15-year-old, as she famously claims in Anton Chekhov's The Seagull, a 25-year-old may not exactly be out of her range. With a whimsical eccentricity, sprightly manner and a knockout figure, this centerpiece of Ian Rickson's Royal Court production - visiting the Walter Kerr with a mixed cast of Brits and Yanks - is the most youthful presence on stage. And unlike many fine actresses who have played the role looking much older than the character's stated 43 years, her Arkadina is not a faded stage star looking foolish as she clings to a long-lost youth, but the hot mom of a 25-year-old who has little intention of aging into an adult.
