Star of screen, stage and TV, the incomparable Whoopi Goldberg is coming to The Ridgefield Playhouse on Saturday, October 11, at 8:30 p.m.

On the surface, GHOST, the ultra-romantic 1990 Oscar-nominated box office hit, seems every bit the perfect motion picture to be repurposed into a flashy stage musical. Unfortunately, the musical that eventually emerged (now playing at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts through August 10) is a chaotic, schizophrenic melange of random adult contemporary pop rock songs intermixed with an amped-up mystical mystery where the swoon-worthy aspects of the original gets diluted in favor of dazzling effects and abstract dance numbers. Why water down the romance?

If you've seen the touring company of GHOST: THE MUSICAL recently, either at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood or its current stop at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa (through August 10), then you'll no doubt recognize the vivacious Carla R. The supernatural power of love is taking Las Vegas by storm as the new Broadway and West End musical Ghost The Musical, adapted from the Academy Award-winning film, opens at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, Aug. 12-17.

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network will air a special tribute in memory of Dr. Maya Angelou with encore presentations including “Super Soul Sunday, “Oprah's Master Class,” “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” and the network premiere of “Oprah Winfrey's Legends Ball” this Sunday, June 1 from 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. ET/PT on OWN. Immediately following, “Oprah's Master Class” with Whoopi Goldberg will air at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Drama Learning Center's teen professional company will present the area premiere of GHOST, the musical this spring. Based on the hit film by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin, GHOST, the musical follows young couple Sam and Molly as their relationship takes a challenging turn with Sam's untimely death. The national tour of GHOST recently performed a limited engagement at Baltimore's historic Hippodrome Theater, but this production marks the area premiere for a local performing group.
