In its 103rd year, the Houston Symphony announced the upcoming season at Jones Hall on Monday, January 25, in front of several hundred guests and supporters, emphasizing the institution's ongoing collaboration with living composers, a continued focus on new music, a renewed concentration on innovative programming, and world-class musicianship and entertainment. Houston Symphony Music Director Orozco-Estrada, Principal POPS Conductor Michael Krajewski, and Executive Director/CEO Mark C. Brown Box Theatre Project returns for their Second Annual Evening of Short Plays: BOXER SHORTS II: From Water to Dust / De Agua al Polvo. This year's series will be directed by Talia Curtin and Kyler Taustin and include: Tape by Jose Rivera, Capricho by Nilo Cruz, Springtime by Maria Irene Fornes, and Bliss by Caridad Svich. All four plays feature playwrights of Latin American descent and are tied together by common themes of memory, reflection, and repentance. "This production is inherently collaborative, as it requires much more 'assembly' than a standard full-length play," notes director Talia Curtin. "Multiple directors must work together with designers and actors to meld these individual plays into a cohesive, one-of-a-kind experience." (more...)

Rubin Vega is a two-time Tony and Drama Desk nominee and recipient of the Theater World, Obie, Blockbuster awards and was recently nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for her role in Jack Goes Boating. She is perhaps best known for the roles she originated, including Mimi (RENT) and Conchita (Anna in the Tropics), both Pulitzer Prize winning Broadway shows for which she was nominated for the Tony award. She also originated the role of Rahmi (Gum), Sofia (Nilo Cruz' Two Sisters and a Piano), Canary Mary (Suzan-Lori Parks' Fucking A, Lucille Lortel nomination) and Lucy (Jack Goes Boating) at the Public Theater, as well as starred in the Broadway revivals of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Magenta) and Les Mis, ('Fantine') and most recently, The New Group's Blood From a Stone ('Yvette') opposite Ethan Hawke.'
